...or get a couple helpers to hoist it into your garbage cart.

(Or just lay the cart on it's side and roll it in)

Unlike my regular residence, this one doesn't have automated pickup. It is the old grab and throw style. Works great when I have to dump lots of stuff.

It could be just a cut off from something a whole lot larger.

Are there any markings on it?

A hundred #s of iron might almost be worth the gas to the scrapyard.

Is it a drydock support base for a ship's hull (while cleaning/painting)?

The day after you throw it away, you'll think of a use for it...

Since Brian states it weighs about 100lbs., I would assume he lifted it off the ground. So whatever this thing is that is it.. There is nothing to sink into the ground. I don't see any holes so no way to fasten it to the ground. Note all the photos of bollards you posted have round tops and the OP photo shows a square. A bollard would not have a square as that could snag the eye in a line. The concave top would also allow a line to rest as opposed to side over.

I would not be surprised to see the underside hollowed out to fit over something like a post. The concave nature of the top also leans toward retaining something, like a person's neck, let their head hang over and whack or maybe a series of these in a row that you maybe would lay a rail on or a telephone pole or spar, so it won't roll while it is being worked on?.
Why are you sure that is the top? As noted in my other posts, it appears to be the bottom to me. The other end is quite round and the part you are calling the top matches the base in many of the bollards I posted photos of that are welded on or sunk in mortar. The way it sits in his yard is not necessarily the way it was in use. A 12x12 base for a bollard seems reasonable to me.

Someone went to a lot of trouble making that concave top (or bottom) and it seems to be for a reason. Burying it in concrete for an anchoring base isn't that reason imo... but I dunno.

Maybe but I've only ever seen really large stacks of wood supporting a ship in dry dock.
