Don't know if it is still typical, but in the past, some "servers" would not only lose their tips, but would also be responsible for the actual cost of the meals that "walked" out without paying.... and that's a LOT for a server... so...

Lock 'em up

I’d walk out of that job.

If Richie Cunningham's Uncle was a Polk County Sheriff, he'd be this guy.

(Attention young people: Richie Cunningham was a fictitious character on a long running TV show back in the 1970's called "Happy Days")

As to the video, Well, the world we lived in when "Happy Days" was a number one hit TV show is so long past that it barely seems possible that it even existed.

I have to wonder if each thought one of the others was picking up the bill. Who would do this with their kids and friends? Probably tourists passing through as someone would probably identify them otherwise when it hit the local news.

I always pay cash in a restaurant and used to always just put the money w/tip on the table and walk out. I wonder if anyone else has ever walked by and causally pocketed it...and the staff though that we dined and dashed? Now I make sure the waiter/waitress see me put the money on the table (if they don't come back to get it right away).

Reminds me of the time not too long ago I was paying for groceries at the local Vons. Checker looks up and says 'Bye, see ya!' to someone over my shoulder. Someone just walked out with a cart full of groceries without paying. I asked if that happened a lot. Yes was his answer. They were instructed not to intervene with shoplifters like that.
That store is no longer open now.
I can't imagine what those parents in the video think they're teaching those kids by doing that.
I don't blame the owner for asking for a credit card to hold till the bill was paid now.

I can count the times on one finger over my entire lifetime that all the diners at my table didn't know who was paying for what.

I saw that happen at an Aldi. Out through the in door, almost running me over, kid in tow, and told the cashier. One said 'oh she paid' and kept working. I saw that look as she was leaving and knew it wasn't true. Aldi prices have gone up as well. The lady had full cart worth at least a hundred bucks or more.

At a Kroger, I saw three cops arrest a guy returning bottles for the $.10 Mi deposit. Local Krogers use rented mobile camera trailers in the parking lot to film everything. There are hundreds of cameras in the store as well. I had a junkie friend in HS that would drive to Ohio and get free empties there and bring them back. There was probably $20 in bottles the guy had.

"What were thinking?"

Seriously?

Well, I'll say it if nobody else will. Just a group of African-Americans knowing how to get over on whitey and doing it, because 9 times out of 10, there are no or minimal consequences for them.

Have you ever been to a restaurant with multiple people and the server asks one check or .... someone in the party had to have answered the question.

Hope they find the bums. Everyone wants " respect" but respect isn't afforded to others.

Nope, absolutely planned and intentional. Fargin' dirtbags, all of them, and unfortunately, working hard to train new dirtbags.

They were probably just "regular people tryin' ta make their way."

I have absolutely wondered if cash on a table in a busy restraurant got stolen. I usually try to put it under something (but still visible) to make it less convenient.

Wow, crazy. I worked at a grocery store when I was in college and had no idea, but it wouldn't surprise me. And grocery stores have REALLY low margins.

The truth is that it's up to the people of Polk County, Florida to stand up and say "No" to this type of thing or it'll continue.

They need to employ this guy:

The truth is this can happen if you're not semi vigilant. The "beer run" is a pretty common young person thing, and is one of the reasons why I park a Polaris Ranger and a Bobcat 3400 pursuit vehicle at the front gate of my pumpkin patch, which gets really packed full of people. Yeah, we've run people down and given em the what for.
