Time zones
I have never lived near a time zone line. Have any of you guys? Whats it's like to live on one side and work on the other side. Do you set clocks to the work side???
How about working on one side and kids in school on the other side?? Must be a slight problem in ones' life style.

[QUOTE=Bill Douglas;11634898]Not actually on a time zone. But here in New Zealand we start Friday drinks a day before you guys.
That's enough reason to move there! ![]() But what about Mondays?

Interesting question. I'd never wondered about it, but there have to be people that deal with it.

What's really effed up is that China only has 1 time zone despite the fact that the areas around them over the same longitude cover 5 different timezones. So yeah, if you live in Beijing, you probably have relatively normal daylight/time, but if you live in the west side of the country, the sun might not rise until 11am or noon. What I remember reading is that the folks in other areas just let their lives revolve around daylight hours.

Yup. Mondays. I was wondering why I'm in a bad mood. It's Monday today - for me. Sometimes life just isn't fair. |

I work in the eastern time zone and live in the central time zone. I'm about 10 to 20 miles from the line. I keep my house and car clocks on central always, I just set my alarm for work to get up an hour or so earlier that what I normally would. I lose an hour going to work, but I gain it back coming home. At first it took some getting used too, but after nearly 11 years, it's no big deal. I always tell people that I am a time traveler, afterall, my name is Marty,

I grew up in Oak Ridge Tennessee, which was part of the Manhattan Project, and in Eastern Time Zone. It is maybe 40 miles to the Central Time zone line on the way to Nashville.
My family still lives there and we have lived all over. They can never understand that we in Texas are an hour behind them. It has gotten better but they used to call at the wrong times and not understand that we were an hour behind. When we lived in El Paso it was worse because they are on Mountain Time, so 2 hours behind EST. That really made my family's collective heads explode. The funniest was when I was stationed at Ft. Campbell Kentucky, which is just north of Nashville. My family couldn't understand that even though we were in the same state we were on different time zones. It shouldn't surprise me though. When we lived in Hawaii, my father called my in-laws in Texas to see if we survived the tsunami that we had after Fukushima earthquake.

Yesterday, there was a tv news story about west michigan and dst.
We are at the western edge and it makes our sunsets so late (for est) that in the summer it's still light out at 10:30 pm. I'm used to it....I'd rather not change it.

Stopped doing that after I realized it was a huge time waste.

Fun time-zone trivia: once a year it's the same time in Florida as it is in Oregon.

I don't live anywhere near a time zone boarder, but when working online I always have to put CST or CDT after any time proposed for a meeting. I have to regularly interface with people in Eastern and Mountain timezones, and sometimes Pacific.
What always screws me up is dealing with someone on India Standard Time, since IST is 30 minutes offset from everyone else. Recent support people have been from Costa Rica, which is in the Central time zone, although I don't know if they follow DST or if they switch the same time we do or not. And for all the idiots that say "We should just have Daylight's savings time all year round", I don't want to wait for the sun to come up at 8:30 in the middle of winter. I'm not happy right now getting up when it's dark out. |

A small part of Oregon is on Mountain time, and the Florida panhandle is on Central time, just one hour off. In the Fall, when we switch back an hour, away from daylight savings time, the switch happens at 2 am local time. So when it's 2 am on switch day in the Central zone, the time switches back to 1 am. And it's still 1 am in the Mountain zone (since the zone won't fall back until 2 am in Mountain). During that hour, it can be the same time in both Oregon and Florida!

At least one reason to live in Hawaii:
Hawaii currently observes 7 time zones all year. DST is no longer in use. Clocks do not change in Hawaii. The previous DST change in Hawaii was on September 30, 1945. https://www.timeanddate.com/time/change/usa/hawaii#:~:text=Hawaii%20currently%20observes%207%2 0time,was%20on%20September%2030%2C%201945. When I lived on Oahu I had to conduct business in the DC area at least once a week. It had to be done first thing due to the 6 hour time difference. Made things a bit difficult when the folks in DC were in prepping to head out for the day and you are just getting started. On the bright side, they didn't bother us late in our day.

My cousin was is now retired, but he practiced international law. Most of his clients were in Germany and he lived in Oologah, OK on a rural ranch. He only went to Germany an average of once per year.
He regularly had late night phone calls. He had a home office that he soundproofed so he could talk on the phone and not bother his family. Much of his business was via email and fax. Email for non sensitive stuff, fax for sensitive items.
