This is an excellent video because you get to hear what one of these conversions sounds like.

I don't know if he started it, but I always think of PFL when I see the title :)...

Did Sid go AWOL too?

Interesting. So they aren't all 500hp monsters.

I didn't watch the videos, but how much weight was added to the P car and red head? The Model S is a heavy car.

According to the video on the 944, the total weight and weight distribution are unchanged from stock.
It now has 300hp. :D

Best

That's kinda amazing, if true. The batteries in any electric vehicle add a ton to the curb weight, so I'd be interested in seeing how they accomplished not adding any weight.

Simple:
It wont do the distance a modern ev does

And the little Alfa is supposedly the same weight, but essentially same as stock hp, but more torque

I have a few real safety concern with these EV's...

- What effect do the battery boxes have on the safety crumple zones of a car?
- How secure are the battery boxes?
- I know they're bolted in but are the bolt through areas reinforced like seat belt mounting point?

What I'm most concerned about is people doing these conversions in their garages.
- Have you ever bought a used car with a "DIY" aftermarket stereo that you had to reinstall? (Shrink tube???)

Yeah, well, Crash safety is not what people generally look for when driving oldtimers.
earl and mid 911's.. the crumble zone for a big crap, is really the B pillar, where the driver sits
Corvairs, unsafe at any speed
Air cooled Vdubs.. in modern traffic.. you really "become" your car if there's ever a pile up with modern vehicles..
Those 2002 BMW's or even E9's.. They are unibodies so bit better then a Vdub, anybody thinking those era cars will protect their driver against modern day cars is a fool and then some.

Just look at the Porsche cayman design.. heavy engine just behind the driver
In a super stiff, modern design chassis with high strenght steels and what not.
They still have to put a strong steel anchor cable in to prevent the driver being crushed by the engine

Now You can reinforce those battery boxes, and They probably are the strongest point in those conversions... New steal, hand welded.. Those boxes won't deform...But it won't matter if the rest of the car made out of 40+ year old ordinary steel crumbles around the reinforcements.

That battery box just becomes a man crusher.

You want safety, get a modern car. A ground up design EV.
You want cool car, convert an old one
You want to remain looking cool while driving a cool car... don't convert it :D

You want safety...
Get an SUV. Even a modern car will be plowed over by an SUV in an accident because the hard points on a SUV are higher than a regular car.
