Interesting. I always wondered why Jack Torrance says this in The Shinning so I just looked it up and now see where the phrase comes from

It may not make sense today or tomorrow but one day you'll likely understand that keeping it and wearing it will be the smallest of sacrifices a fella in this situation could make.

I think the only reason HardDrive's wife bought the watch was because she really thought he liked it and wanted to surprise him with it. It's not like it's something she picked out, even though spending that much on a presumption is not wise. I don't know the wife, but I'll bet she'd rather see HardDrive enjoying something he really likes rather than pretending to enjoy it to preserve her feelings. If one has to eat a $10K gift he doesn't like out of fear of hurting the wife's feelings, then the relationship probably isn't strong.

Good replies by everyone.

Your better half sounds like a real catch. Unless you adamantly told her you did not want the watch after all, she may be thinking that you were still wanting it, but did not want to splurge for it?

Keep the wife, keep the watch and see what happens.

Just remember, you can trade the wife in, but not the watch.

Exchange it for a Speedy Moonwatch, maybe a DSOM.

Just exchange it and be thrilled. Husband's burden.

Any chance on seeing a photo of the watch? (Or more details so we can search on Google)

Tell her what you really think. There are lots of guys who would love to have an opportunity to meet someone who cares about them.

That thing is freaking huge! or that guy is tiny. Not for me but no watch is for me. I've never worn a watch and have no interest in them. Now that everyone carries a phone why does anyone even wear a watch? A fashion thing?

A quick glance to my wrist and I know the time and date, with a phone I have to pull it out and turn it on.

And yes, many people enjoy the complicated gear movements of a high end mechanical watch and how it looks, me included.

That's a great looking watch and I really like that Omega did something different.
- AND you can actually buy one.

Try buying a Rolex at list price from an authorized dealer right now.

True Story , Been there Done That, Made the BIG mistake

This happened to me. But not exactly at the same dollar scale.
When we were Very young, just barely past teenagers, and not making much money, my love of my life, first wife, now deceased, bought me a $200 Seiko watch, and paid for it with MY credit card.
She loved me and wanted to show it with a nice gift.
Well, I was young and basically stupid about these things, and I threw a big hissy-fit-tantrum, and told her right now to take it back, what were you thinking!
Of course, she was crushed, like a kicked puppy, and returned it as I demanded.
So, now I don't have the watch, and don't have the wife. One of those big regrets.
I've thought about this many times over the last 40 years or so, it still hurts.
I would like to recommend that you keep the watch, in a special safe place, and touch it and notice it, and be reminded that she loves you That much.
This is not about the watch, or the money, it's that she loves you. You win. Be happy.

PS good call, ask that this thread be deleted.

Methinks Josh has already reconsidered and realizes how lucky he is to have "his problem" ...

It's the thought that counts .... I think

Interesting how everyone assumes the wife deeply loves and cares for the husband since she bought the watch. It could also mean she just wastes the husband's money recklessly. Hardly great wife material, in fact, the opposite.

Also, if a guy pretends to be a high roller shopping for $10k watches, but then throws a hissy fit when the wife actually pulls the trigger, then he never could afford the $10k watch in the first place. If you can't laugh off an accidental $10k purchase, then you couldn't afford it in the first place. Lesson learned for you.
