CONFIRMED! All Electric 718

While it's been hinted at for some time now, it's now officially confirmed last month. Although, we honestly expected it earlier but due to the pandemic has slowed things down a bit. When should we expect it you ask? Well, Porsche states by "the middle of the decade" via The Drive here."

Quote:
"The Taycan is 100 percent a Porsche and inspires all kinds of people – existing and new customers, experts and the trade media. We are stepping up our electric offensive with another model," Blume said. "By the middle of the decade, we want to offer our mid-engine 718 sports car exclusively in an all-electric form."

That's not what they're saying. Still, the weight should be evenly distributed with motors in all corners and a battery pack under the floor.

Definitely did not say it was mid-engined.

Weight at the ends to limit spin, or centered to enhance turning rate?

I'm OK with that. Just as long as I've died of old age before there is an all electric 911.

Certain things in life have to remain sacred.

Knowing Porsche and electric motors it will likely accelerate like a Taycan, and be a real blast to drive. And they can claim zero emissions to keep the greenies happy.

The Porsche Cayman GT4 has a very nice flat-six 4.0L.

Stijn,
I say no problem as the Porsche Cayman is a very good car with the smaller engine.

The car is engineered to go forever which makes a great car. It also makes the driver better as they learn the momentum driving technics.

Not sure what you are trying to argue? I already have a Cayman with the smaller engine.
But it's an NA 6 banger, that sounds good and is already appreciating, not a fart 4, the reason why my 6 banger is already appreciating.

the turbo 4 may have more power, but it sounds like chit. NA flat 6 is what Porsche is about so the Fart 4 to many is an abomination
Flat6 sings in the revs.. but as a base model, if 6 is no longer doable, I'de much rather have a NA 4 that revs like mad and sounds great, like the old Fuhrman engines then a Turbo 4 that sounds like a Subie

I'd say buy a Porsche 911.

yeah, again.. engines over 3 liter(and turbo) are impossible expensive due to taxation here.
And I think they are bloated these days, a cayman is closer to the old 911 then a new 911 is

again , what's your argument.. I Say the 987 981 is appreciating due to the fart 4 engine.. and you try to argue i should get a gts gt4 or 911 ?? totally missing the point here.

Therein lies the problem. The previous kid brothers to the venerable 911 (the 912, 914, 924/944/968) as well as the Boxster/Cayman were always the little one always trying to prove themselves to their older bro.

If you go to a typical track day with PCA, you will see that a large portion of cars, especially in the intermediate to upper run groups, are of the Cayman / Boxster variety. They are cheaper to buy and run than the 911's, somewhat easier to drive, and are 80-90% capable at a 50-60% total cost of ownership, in my estimation.

By electrifying the Caymans, it will no longer be a kid brother, but rather the red-headed step child. Sure, it will be fast, and the technology in it will be amazing. But will it still retain the Porsche DNA? Will it still have something to prove against the 911, or will it live in a league of its own?

I would not underestimate how the kid-brother relationship to the 911 plays into Cayman ownership. That is a big part of the personality of the car. Electrifying it may taint that aspect, IMHO.
