Oh well, I tried… $175 for Wingrove’s book, if anybody wants it. Not mine, no affiliation with the seller, etc. | ||

First 917 I saw in person was Chuck Stoddard’s plain white car sitting amongst several street Porsches in the Stoddard showroom back in 1975-76. I can still remember how surprisingly tiny it seemed compared to the 911s and 914s of the era.

Chuck’s 917 was one of the most original, unmolested examples out there. Worth a look, if you ever get to see it.

I lived in Mentor, right next to Willoughby where his dealership was. I left plenty of window smears there on Sunday mornings planting my face on the glass to see what they had going on. That was very early 90's.

That might be Chuck’s car but it’s not his 917.

FWIW. I remember a documentary, maybe one of the Victory by Design set, where Attwood said Vic Elford was too hard on his cars. It may have been in the context that if he was co-driving with Elford vs. Herrmann in the 1970 LeMans winning 917 that it probably would not have made it 24 hours.

It's a little too 908-ish. Still tiny. This is probably it. Thanks.

That would explain the taillight differences between the pics and the others that I mentioned. It's not, I don't think a 906, so it's got to be 907-910. I believe you that it's a 907.

The 906 and 910 are completely different. Not one of those, for sure. The 908 and 907 had a lot of similarities, pretty sure that’s a 907 though.

If you put a flat 12 engine and transmission on the ground, and then sit with your back against it and your legs stretched out, that is the length of a 917.

It’s a little longer than that. Short tails are about five or 6 inches longer than a 914 and the long tails are another couple feet longer than that.
