How do you get rid of poison ivy without dying?

I've got a mostly flat, mostly clear area that's probably 40'x40.' When we bought the house, it had been mowed so I didn't notice any, and probably wasn't really looking for it. Last spring, it came up and nearly filled the area. My wife mowed this winter/early spring. I just went back and was going to pull the little 3-5" sprouts that were popping up all over the place. Then I realized that the entire area is criss-crossed with vines along the ground. This sheiße is like a farkin iceberg!

I've got some poison ivy specific round up to spray on it, but they say that even if it's dead you can still get the oil on you and you can't even burn it because the fire carries the oil and being in the smoke or breathing the smoke is dangerous.

What could I get that would burn hot enough to destroy everything in the 40x40? Maybe an above ground pool full of napalm.

Pramitol....it's a soil sterilizer that will last for a year or more.
Available in your local farm supply store.

Add Round-Up to it...if the vines are established.

Goats like to eat it, and they are immune to it.

I agree with the others you need to kill it down to the roots. I use Ground clear.

I can break out with a poison ivy rash by looking at pictures of it

The smoke issue is real, btw.

I use all the chemicals mentioned then leave it alone until it looks dead then reapply chemicals.

The trick is what next for that plot of land? What do you have in mind?

Lowes carries the Bio-Advanced line...used to be Bayer. They make good products.
This one is labeled for poison ivy. Plus..it is systemic. The pramitol is not....but I use the pramitol for spots where I can't get my mower. One spray lasts the entire season...unlike round-up.

We don't currently have any plans, other than to clear it. There was a barn that was damaged by a storm and then knocked down. The PO left the fence up around the barn and just let the area become over grown. We're going to take down the old wooden fence, burn what's left of the barn, and essentially turn the area back into "yard." I know that getting this area clear of PI is probably going to take a year or two, at least.

I was a senior in HS on the very first Earth Day. Our class was loaded on a school bus and dropped off by fours with garbage bags to pick-up cans and bottles.
Our group of four was within walking distance of a small convenience store. (MI had the 18 yo drinking age then)

We pooled our money and bought beer....and turned the empty cans in when the bus returned.

Some friends of mine bought 1/4 section of land as a ranch in the corner of the county. It had been owned by a widow for many years. She had paid to have the house area kept up, but the rest of the property was left to go wild. When they moved in they looked around carefully at all the weeds and overgrowth and realized it would be a massive project to clear. They bought several goats, and in short order, anything in mouth range of a goat was gone. They had several patches of poison ivy and the goats just ate it to the ground like it was candy.

They sold off the goats, and bought longhorn cattle, and let them roam the property. Soon the vegetation was only trees 6 to 7 feet and higher. They bought two horses and now have 6 horses, that got the vegetation eaten even higher.

He has converted all the open area to hay production, and raises enough hay to sell off excess and still feed his livestock. He has an ample supply of manure as a bonus.

He too is allergic to poison ivy. He knew there were the large areas of it and he was really happy when a fellow rancher told him about goats and poison ivy.
