Marv (or anyone else), do you know which species that is? I was into snakes as a kid the way some kids are into dinosaurs and have a pretty serious field guide, but it's not in there. Look like it might be a color variant of a sidewinder, but it doesn't seem to have much in the way of the 'horns' above the eyes.

We get diamondbacks, mohave greens, bulls, gophers. We also have a bunch of big gray owls at night and hawks by day.

Most of the time we have a nice balance that doesnt bother anyone. The local avian air force handles pest control well. Then one day something new pops up.

I haven't seen one this year. Copperheads are the most prevalent. Steve has snakes at his front door waiting on Pelicans.

We have lots of different rattlers here. I've seen green, gray, dark - almost black, and pink. This one seems to be a "Red Diamond."

"Red Diamond Rattlesnake: Several species and subspecies of rattlesnake reside in California, and this is one that can be found in the San Diego area. Very venomous, they tend to be two to over four feet in length. Their coloration varies but can be pinkish, reddish, or brownish in hues. Males tend to be larger than females, which is unusual when it comes to snakes. Like most rattlers, they eat mammals and lizards, as well as birds. Adult California ground squirrels are immune to their venom and tend to fight back when a rattler tries to eat them."

The most venomous snake we have is the Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan - Oxyuranus microlepidotus.
- It's widely considered the most lethal snake on the planet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inland_taipan

"It is estimated that one bite possesses enough lethality to kill at least 100 fully grown humans."

We don't get these guys at the Armadillo Ranch. Soil is not to their liking. However, ten miles away in the river bottom black dirt, they seem to thrive. Was at a friends ranch yesterday and discovered this guy living in a cattle guard. I heard it so started looking around. In the first image you can barely see it. I got a little closer and zoomed in for the shot.

"little guy"?? Dang thing looks pretty long to me.

I'll remember to look at the cattle guard next time I go to the FIL's farm house. Never thought of that.

If we are gonna include spiders in this thread.....

One of my earliest life lessons from my Dad who grew up in a farming family of very meager means during The Great Depression in South Mississippi, was if you are walking along the railroad tracks and decide to sit down on the track to take a break, don't sit in a spot where the rails are joined with a splice plate. Sure enough as demonstrated with a small piece of dirt tossed at the splice plate...out jumped a Black Widow spider!

Interesting. Not that I'm likely to be sitting on any train tracks, but that's certainly something to remember.
