Well, My Daughter Talked Me Into Facebook!

Good lord what a crazy mess that site is, no wonder the government wants to get rid of it! I signed up and found there are "groups" for most all the ships and commands I was stationed on while in the US Navy. Sooooooo I signed up for Enterprise CVA(N)65 (both public and private), USS Bainbridge CGN25, USS Truxtun CGN35 and a general one for US Navy NUCS (nuclear power). Since I was in there before some of the people on Facebook now were even born it is interesting to read their reactions to what it was like in the "old" navy, before women were on ships, ETC. I have had a lot of memories come back once I start thinking about things. Amazingly many of the men and women say whoa we could never do that!
I also somehow got into a "dating group" and it seems like all the women in Tijuana, Mexicali, Tecate and other places I have never heard from want to meet me?! No thanks to that but it is neat how many people knew me or served with me or the "legend of Chief Rogers" since I was a real fireball for many years!
John

Meta is not known for privacy. So if you don't mind a few different people reading your messages...

I have a facebook account but don't use it for anything other than looking at restaurant menus (ones that are to cheap to setup their own website). I sure wouldn't put anything on it about me or a picture of me.

I thought it was rather odd that a homosexyouwell gentleman from a different country wanted to be friends. It was probably about that time that I stopped using it.

Lots of settings to help with that. By default they are all pretty wide open, but you can crank them down.

again, you can change a setting and that won't happen.

Exactly. I don't use it a lot. I don't post much. But I am in a few groups, and have friends that are ex-colleagues (networking) and remote family that I can stay in touch or informed about. Mostly I tell folks "Happy Birthday" when their birthday is announced.

This!

I have a Facebook account. ONLY on my computer, never on my phone. I can keep up with a few real friends and relatives. If a friend or relative starts posting political crap, I stop following them.

I use it to keep up friends. I post very little, and those are mostly birthday wishes or anniversary congratulations.

It is a useful tool.

The average age of FB users has increased over the last few years as other platforms have come on line.

Yeah I used to get that too, except its random ladies that for whatever reason have sought me out to do them in the pooper. Which helped me realize I had a privacy setting set wrong, whoops, click, fixed. Sorry ladies.

Few years ago I was getting these awesome ads for 'helium flow meters' and 'whole site power regulation'. Of course I clicked on them to find out more which begat more cool ads. I sort of felt bad that advertisers were paying to get my eyes on those ads, but not that bad. I'm still not sure what is special about helium flow meters or who would want one, but they look to be well made.

Then one day it all changed. Instead of industrial ads it was 'kustom choppers', bars 3000 miles away that featured lady mma fights, and worst of all ads for hooters (those vacant eyes!)

Facebook flipped who it thought I was, from wrong to wrong. Actually gave me a bit of hope that the best ai there is had no clue at all what sort of advertising opportunity I was.

I'm pretty wary of friending people on fb. My bar is to only see people I want to hear from and so far it works pretty well. Someone starts annoying me they get unfriended. Other thing that helps is using the button to tell fb an ad is annoying - zap and its gone forever.

Even so... something happened to my facebook this spring. The selection of posts became really dismal, they started pushing a bunch of video and it all really turned me off and made me tune out. Was like they're feeding me all the gritty nasty stuff from the bottom of the barrel - like I've worn out my welcome.

There's a few small groups I follow for local mountain bike trail building and they're good people, but for the most part my facebook feed is a pretty ugly thing these days. Sort of drove me away along with the people whose posts I actually enjoyed.

I tried it for a year or so way way back when, to connect with my hometown and high school in Connecticut. I had not seen anybody in forever, so really could not relate and deleted the account.

When Facebook first was started...I was a charter member. A year or so later, I forgot my password and tried the wrong one more than three times and they locked me out.

Best move they could have made....I am forever grateful.

Haven't had Farcebook in many years. The only thing I miss about it is that I used to do a thing I called the "Red Car Of The Day" where I would post pics and a brief description of a red car, any car from the 30's, to the 80's. That was fun to do and to this day I have friends that tell me that they miss my "Red Car Of the Day".

Had Facebook for one month. Only had it for the car and plane, no personal data. It got crazy so fast I said F-this chit. Bailed out and delegated everything.

But we all know, it doesn’t all go away

I’ve been looking for a used E46 B30 engine and thought I would try Facebook marketplace. So I signed up, using a fake name and when I joined several groups for BMWs/Parts/Etc, As I looked at them m, at least one of the sites, if not more had 50% porn pictures posted.

So, as I scroll down, I would report them. The next day, I go to look at my Facebook marketplace and Facebook has blocked me but did not give a reason. In order to appeal, you have to send a video of yourself moving your head, to make sure you’re a real person. I’ve not heard back yet.

This is why Facebook is so ****ed up. There are pictures of porn kids can see, I report it, and I get blocked. 🙄
