Interesting. Can I recommend that you re-read this thread, as homework for your upcoming dinner?

The two fastest teams are CGR (Honda) and ECR (Chevy). I am going to go with CGR and Honda, but like others said, you can never rule Penske out.

Agree 100%

Need a driver and team owner that has never won before to beat the big boys.

It's great to root for the underdog...but not often the way to bet.

i think the arrow/mclarren buys are good bets. i think ericson is a good bet. never count out the penske's even if they didnt show speed in qualifying.

and im sitting here racking my brain for what dumb reason dixon wont win this year. he's found just so many different ways to not with the indy 500 ...

^^^That's true, but betting on Helio last year to pick up #4 could have paid off pretty well - I sure wasn't expecting that!

(BTW, I was impressed with the way Tim Cindric and Roger Penske seemed genuinely happy for HC after the race. Full disclosure, I'm a fan of Team Penske.)

Actually, I was going to say the same about Gannassi (and Dixon in particular).

Bobby Rahal was one of my fav drivers back years ago so, by default, I'd like to see Graham take the big prize. Yeah, I know, he is not much better than Marco but at least he has some success without riding on his family name.

So many drivers talented drivers back in the Bobby Rahal era; a great mix of the old soldiers like the Unsers and Johncock, the current kings of the track like Mears and Tom Sneva and Emmo, and all the young lions like Little Al, Paul Tracy, Dario all hoping to grab the brass ring. The Indy 500 was something I looked forward to all month, and the racetrack did an excellent job of keeping interest in the race from the first of May to Memorial day. AutoWeek was a true weekly, printed on newsprint, and there would be plenty of fascinating information in my mailbox and after it was all over a great synopsis of the race. I was a big big fan of CART back then, and Mears was my guy. He drove all those beautiful Penske cars, and would just bide his time for 490 miles and see what he had left for those last 4 laps.
I still have a bunch of the old full-page Goodyear ads that were printed in the USA Today which showed a little color photo of all 33 drivers.

I would love for Helio to get #5 and break the record.

I wonder why Penske hasn’t tried to get a modern F1 team going as well. I’d imagine he has the resources.

For some reason I’m pulling for Marco. I’m sure it hasn’t been easy for him in a lot of ways (not all ways) so he is my dark horse.

Michael seems to have that attitude/chip that I suppose you may need but maybe sometimes not in all situations. Sometimes less is more Mike!

I know it's amazingly fast
But it sure looks boring to watch

There is barely any variation in speed, it's a car that goues round and round and round and round...

I'll admit I've never been much of a sports watcher, other then F1 in the Schumacher peak era... I tend to see something and if it looks like fun i just wanna do it myself.

And either I can do it, or i cant but the nWatching things I cant do myself is like reminding me what I can't do.. so i don't

Again , I know this is amazing feat, but you can watch one do it at 215 mph oro 230 mph or 240 mph average..

It all looks the same unless there's a crash innit?

If you find it all looking the same, then that's an accurate description...for you. For me? Well, I and others posting on this thread see nuances you don't. You didn't notice that the corners have differences? How close to the edge of losing it they are? How there are no places on the track to relax a bit? Evidently not. So yes, I guess it all looks the same.

This kind of reminds me of a pool novice wondering what the big deal is when two of the world's best play. What's the big deal? Every shot made looks like one a grandma could make. It's easy, right?

off course the corners have differences, but ther differences are the same each lap.
The corners don't change each lap

After all I've done a 200 laps on Indy in the game once , and while i know it's not the same as what they do , in the game i learned it only takes a split second of distraction to cock it up permantly, which sucks if you are at lap 190
But that's on them, not on the viewer the long stretch of the track does leave some room to relax btw..

My point is that it is not much to look at, the exitement is to the driver not the viewer.
Again, 4 laps at average 234 or 4 laps at 229 . it does look the same..
I don't feel it in my butt and neck like the driver does.
We don't hear the car like they do

I also don't understand why people watch darts.. the most boring spectator sport known to man kind. except perhaps for pool that is..

I've told this story many times, but I lived in Speedway, IN for a few years when I was a kid. You could hear the cars from my house. This was back in the old days when drivers didn't stay in fancy RVs, etc. They often stayed in local apartments or stayed with residents. When we first moved there (spring of 1973?), we lived in some apartments before we found a house and Gordon Johncock stayed in the apartment next to ours during the month of May. I was ~9 years old at the time, but my Dad was a big racing fan, so we would hang out in the parking lot and talk racing with Johncock. Not all day long, but he was literally "just another car guy" and had no problem hanging out talking. Another driver (back-marker guy named Larry McCoy) stayed with some people in the house next to ours once we moved to a house. And...I don't remember the whole story but my Dad knew a guy named Bob Harkey who drove back then. Heck, Billy Vukovich (the 3rd?) went to my junior high.

Fun times back then. A couple of pictures my Dad took:

I think Penske lost interest in F1 after losing Revson and Donohue...
