356-C came with the same engine as a VW bug. who nu?

I was watching the mecum auction from Indy
Chris Jacobs was reviewing a
really nice 1963 or 64 (and original) 356-C that was
due up on the block
Imagine my shock when he explained that
the 356-C came with the same engine as a VW bug!

I had no idea.

Totally agree. He was present on the Overhaulin episode when Foose did some funky things to a 356. Even put a VW oval window in the back. It started out pretty original.

My point was no one can buy a 356 with a 1966 title. I bet if you threw enough money at Porsche AG they would build you a brand new 356. But it would not get a 2022 title.

Meh. The oval window isn't bad. If I was going to go for a modded 356, I'd want an Emory. I don't think I could sell enough organs to make that happen though.

I was just teasing you. Good natured joshing between Pelicanites. What he said is literally true, that they did make 356s into 1966. He didn’t say anything about title, much as a 1964 and a half Mustang is still titled as a 65 model. But I don’t think he knew that a handful of leftovers were assembled in early 66. I suspect he was talking beyond his scope of knowledge and just got lucky that a couple were actually made in 66. Substantively, they ended 356 production in 1964 and wound down final assembly in 1965. The handful that came in 66 were literally leftovers. But what fun it would be to have one of them.

The mechanics were having a fit on that episode because of the window. Some of them were VW guys and new the value of the sheet metal and wanted it kept on a VW.

I agree with you on the Emory stuff. Much more in tune with Porsche designs vice SoCal mods (not that that is a bad thing in itself).

The Foose 356 is sort of like the guys on MT that do great work on American muscle then put 22" wheels on a 1960s car. Doesn't look right. Just like these wheels look all wrong.

Other than a numbers matching engine in a 356, a 912 engine would be the most desirable. It’s just a further evolution of the 356C mill.

And of course, a 356C engine and a VW bug engine do not share one single part. Other than that, they are the same.

Not to nitpick or anything, but I believe the cam drive gear, distributor drive gear, spacer and lock ring on the nose of the crankshaft are direct VW bug parts.

That may be true, but parts from vendors often work on multiple vehicles. My 911 electric seat connectors have Mercedes logo right on them as they are right from a Mercedes parts bin. If a part is already made and available why engineer a new and more expensive part from scratch. My car has many 928 parts as well.

If the drive gears for internal engine parts and a snap ring work, why have a new part made?

The crank sensors for my 911 are from a BMW. Way cheaper than the Porsche part and the only difference is the leads are a little longer. It is just parts from a supplier that work. My car also has some identical parts to a 959, so it has DNA of the 959!

But a common ancestral design. Actually it’s kind of funny how much the two engines look alike, considering how few parts they share. And of course you can pretty much pluck out the Porsche motor and plug in a bug, without significant mods.

My first 356 was a faded silver (between grey primer splotches) ‘60 coupe, with a 40 horse VW motor. I owned it at least 6 months before I figured out it wasn’t a Porsche motor back there. Didn’t care. It was so damn much fun to drive. That was in high school, and it cost me all of $600. The world was a better place.,,,
