I've watched it several times and IMO he just lost. I see no foul.

Maybe not a "foul" - but absolutely came over too far and inhibited Sagan's path. Chit like this is how crashes happen during sprints.

There was a rider in a red jersey but don't recall his name (turquoise helmet) IIRC directly behind Sagan that was really unhappy with the way Bernard blocked him out. IMO that was a more egregious incident.

The Aussie Caleb Ewan.

His words:

Quote:

“They started sprinting in the middle of the road and the right side was free, so I decided to go to the right side and then they all moved to the right side,” Ewan said tersely at the finish. “I think it started with Van Aert and then Sagan made a bit more of a dramatic swing to the right.”
That's my opinion too. It started with Van Aert. Sagan was just trying to get ahead - and going to the right was the only path. There wasn't enough room, thanks to Van Aert moving to the right. And there certainly wasn't room for a second sprinter, such as Ewan.

There will always be tight sprint finishes but by rule a rider isn't allowed to move over and impede the path of anther cyclist.

Even if it was determined by officials not to be a foul, it certainly was bush league.

Tour de France: Caleb Ewan left angry with Van Aert and Sagan after sprint finish
The Australian rider says he was squeezed out when Van Aert and Sagan moved to the right during the sprint.

Ah that jibes with what I saw. Pretty crazy to see a 160+ km race come down to a centimeter or two.

flatbutt 07-05-2022 07:33 AM

Baz, can you believe van Aert's finish today? My word what a performance.

Total domination, Flatty.

Performances like that are what keep us all excited about this event!

I'm stunned at the speed these guys can maintain. I struggle to maintain 13-15 mph on the flat but these guys are moving at 30+ mph consistently.

BTW...I think the cobbles are just mean.

Baz 07-06-2022 08:14 AM

Brutal stage today on the cobbles!

That said - Aussie Aussie Aussie! :D

matthewb0051 07-06-2022 09:33 AM

Yesterday I started thinking, "I wonder when the Tour starts?".

I had totally forgotten and hadn't seen an ad on TV. Thanks NBC, I missed first 3 stages.

I've also noticed that unlike when NBCSN covered the Tour, USA is only showing live. In prior years NBCSN would have shown a replay right after the race recap. I guess reruns of Law and Order SVU is more better.

Anyone know where replays are shown? I've caught the final few Km's the last two days.

flatbutt 07-06-2022 11:14 AM

I think Peacock has reruns.

Those cobbles are just mean spirited. Another finish that's ridiculous.
The bike push is a helluva way to get that extra centimeter or two.

herr_oberst 07-06-2022 12:21 PM

Roglic dislocated his shoulder! I wonder if he'll be able to finish the tour? I reckon he'll try and ride tomorrow.

Matt - as I mentioned to Rutager - You Tube is your friend here.

Not sure if you will find an entire 4 hour replay but most of the time the highlights will give you want you want.

I have cable and am watching on USA. I miss the evening broadcasts but have worked out a system where I run out and get work done early and then chase back here for the last hour or so. Seems to be working.....

matthewb0051 07-06-2022 12:38 PM

^^^

I think NBC really dropped the ball by cutting NBCSN and keeping USA. They claim USA reached more households which is why they made the choice. But that really just split the baby. Here's your sports and here's hour rerun TV shows (which can be found elsewhere too).

greglepore 07-07-2022 04:30 AM

Peacock has every stage available on rerun-and at least the premium has both the USA coverage with commercials and the world feed (Eurosport announcers) without commercials, and start to finish coverage.
I get Peacock with Hulu, but would pay for it just for the indycar coverage-flag to flag practices and qualifying in addition to races, and available on demand after the live coverage for a substantial time.

I just saw the coolest thing. The Tour analysts have a table with a computer display in the top. They can display 3D projections of the riders on a moving road surface and show the drafting space behind a rider. Way cool.

flatbutt 07-07-2022 06:49 AM

Pogacar is just a phenom. I thought Rogalich was going to pull off a stunner given his shoulder injury but Pogacar is unreal. The mountains are coming.

They call it the "sandbox"....:p

Yeah but how about US rider Neilson Powless?

He'd be in yellow right now if not for the 10 sec. time bonus Podacar got on the finish.

And another good day for fellow yank Quinn Simmons too.

Another day averaging over 30mph.....crazy......

lindbhr 07-07-2022 08:02 AM

I'd never heard of Powless before this TDF. I was really hoping he'd be leading the GC after this stage. Still, very exciting to have an USA rider second after stage 6.

flatbutt 07-07-2022 09:52 AM

I just can't believe the power that these guys can generate at the end. That was a punishing climb at the finish but Pogacar just said "see ya!".
