I was really excited when Greg Lemond went to Europe and went onto the big French team with Bernard. In one of the stages of the tour of Italy Bernard Hinault was leading and the Italians did NOT like him of the whole French team at all! This was before barracades on the mountain top stages and the spectators would nearly close the road for a non Italian rider. Soooooo the Renault team director pulled ahead of MR B and opened both front car doors and spectators went FLYING! That happed twice more and finally the spectators were ordered by the police to stay off the pavement and they sort of did. Those races are on some very old VHS tapes and I watched one the other night in the garage/machine shop in my old TV that has a VHS and DVD player built in.

Oh, that would something to see. There's a lot we don't get to see in the US about bike racing. There's a lot of dirty racing.

Nice mountain.....where the Englishman had his heart explode....due to using "speed"!

Peacock did a minute on the Caravan that precedes the riders. I had no idea it was such a grand thing. There are dozens of commercial interests giving out all kinds of swag. Apparently, it can get so crazy that the caravan includes a few ambulances, just in case.

CurtEgerer 07-17-2022 08:48 AM

Yeah, that was really interesting. Had no idea the caravan stretches 6 miles long

And at what point do they charge these environmental wackos gluing themselves to the road with criminal violence? With a peloton of 100+ charging along at 35-40 MPH they absolutely know the carnage and injury that they can cause. Steven Kruijswijk was a BIG loss today for Jumbo  All due, directly or indirectly, to these nutjobs.

Is Sagan second tier now, or will he have a Cavendish-style renaissance?

IDK but after reviewing his 2017 event I have a different perspective on his finger pointing earlier in this tour.

Those protestors will likely be charged. I heard that if you're nicked for any reason on the route the gendarmes take you to the nearest lockup straight away.

What a nice story, albeit sad for Hugo Houle's stage win today.

Scott Douglas 07-19-2022 08:02 AM

I feel for Hugo losing a brother to a drunk driver like that. Glad he was able to win today.

For you guys that have raced, how often does a chain break?
I've never heard of that happening in the TDF before.

Baz 07-19-2022 08:11 AM

No big changes in GC after today. But tomorrow's stage might offer some opportunities for change....

That's crazy rare AFAIK. I wonder if it just jumped a cog.

Not often, a testament to the strength of modern gear.

I've never raced, but I broke the quik-link once on my fast bike. I was stomping on the pedals full gas and was incredibly lucky not to smash my nuts into the top tube or my knee into the bar.

Well the real stage winner today was American Brandon McNulty.

Thought TP raising his arms up when he crossed the finish was a little ingenuous, given he was pulled up the entire mountain never taking the lead until his attack the last 25 feet.

Another good day for JV.....looking good for an overall win - but not so fast - we have another day of climbing tomorrow.....so who knows?

flatbutt 07-20-2022 07:23 AM

McNulty rode an incredible stage. I won't take anything away from Pogacar because 1) I'm a mere mortal 2) he has shown a lot of heart IMHO. IDT he will make up 2:18 at this point . He's been at 2+ for awhile now. This is JVs tour to win or lose.

flatbutt 07-21-2022 04:40 AM

Yikes! Rider vs motorcycle crashes today. A motorcycle started a small chain rexn today. MC forces a bike to crash causing a car to slam on the brakes causing a bike to move left but he is blocked by another MC and then hits the car. Fortunately all at low speed.

Pogacar and Vindegaard are really battling it out today. Pogy keeps trying to break away but no joy. Other than Vindy just totally cracking I don't see how Pogacar can make up the gap. This is so good!

Baz 07-21-2022 07:57 AM

Just finished watching the last hour of today's stage (#18).

Epic.

1,2 and 3 go to Yellow, White, and Green respectively.

White crashes and Yellow waits for him. Not going to attack when a man crashes. Sportsmanship - and still gets the stage win.

Today's stage is what it's all about.

This is the greatest sporting event in the entire world.
