Your assumption is incorrect - the two flags work independently of each other. The homeowner simply pushes the yellow flag down when he or she retrieves the mail. There is a tab on the yellow flag that sits in front of the mailbox door. Once the mailbox door is opened, it pushes the tab down, and raises the yellow flag. Closing the door leaves the flag in the up position, notifying the homeowner that the mail has arrived.

Simple, yet genius solution to an ages long 'problem' of checking for the mail...

I will try and take some video today to show you how it works.
