I checked a couple of places out. Some diamonds and gold got you up to around $40k. There were a couple that were practically diamond crusted like a woman's watch and platinum, and those both said "call for price."

I called for a price and when I couldn't understand the Asian woman on the phone it sounded like she reluctantly handed the phone over to an apparently agitated sounding black guy?

Manners aside, I never did get an answer in a timely matter.

London has "organised" gangs that steal high end watches and I've been told they can spot a fake from across a street. If you have one I'd only wear it in a better part of town but just recently even Beverly Hills has had some smash and grab robberies.

There's a been a correction in the market. Rolex prices are a little soft right now but you still wont find any in stock at your local authorized dealer (unless you want a 90k platinum day date). But someone must be buying them new from an AD. Rolex make close to 1,000,000 watches a year. The most desirable models would be going to established buyer who don't resell on the grey market.

If a new Rolex turns up on the grey market they can track back to who bought it using the serial number. Apparently they now have a growing list of people they wont sell to. I don't know if I really believe all of that because there are plenty of current, new & unworn Rolex's for sale on the grey market but the price is a lot more than retail. In some cases these watches go for double the RRP.

I bought my Rolex new in 1987. A GMT Master. One of the best investments I have ever made. I paid $1675 for it, still have the receipt. I used to wear it everyday up until a few years back when I bought my TAG. I have been offered $20K for my Rolex.....I will never sell it. Going to belong to one of my sons eventually...sadly he will probably sell it and buy an Apple watch...:(

As of 10 years ago, fakes got good that they need to be opened up to be spotted

I am more than suspicious of the reported mugging. I suspect no video of the incident or the suspects will be produced. How did two pistol packing desperados know to target this couple? And why did they take only their valuable watch? After taking the time and effort to commit a brutal robbery, they couldn't be bothered to take the woman's purse or the man's wallet? It's always questionable when the claimed thief appears to have inside knowledge yet disappears without a trace and when the criminal goes to unusual lengths to commit a crime that doesn't return them any profit. If I were the victim's insurer I would be examining the claim closely.

There are some characteristics of Rolexes that can be spotted as a forgery from across the street, like a two-tone Day-Date, or the wrong bezel on a sports watch, but in general you have to be within a couple of feet to tell whether a cheap fake is real, and the good fakes require handling.

javadog 07-12-2022 08:12 AM

I’ve already watched the video, what’s your excuse?

sc_rufctr 07-12-2022 09:13 AM

A big problem with a fake that most people miss: The watch doesn't "fit" the person wearing it.

In other words if you have the money to buy a Rolex you'll be wearing nicer clothes and carry yourself in a confident manner. Your personal grooming would also be above average. Someone wearing a fake sticks out like dogs balls IMO. Just sayin.

aschen 07-12-2022 09:21 AM

Im a complete slob and wear a real rolex 80% of my waking days, just a lowly explorer however.

Silly to want a fake anything IMHO. Super fakes are really scary close but are like 1000$, why not just buy a really nice seiko or Hamilton or something.

Right. Folks that can afford a Rolex don't always look it.

I scrolled through article on the link with my phone several times and didn’t see the video link. I guess I should have viewed it on my desktop.

You can see it on your iPhone. Here’s another link, try this one.

And yet here we are posting on a Porsche forum. ;)

if your doggy is named Rolex

The economic calculation needs rebalancing.
It is far to cheap to be a scumbag these days.

You may think you're "a complete slob" but I'd bet your clothes are clean, drive a nice daily, live in an above average house and generally "squared away" financially.

Also, there's nothing lowly about an Explorer. They're ultimate tool watch.

pwd72s 07-12-2022 10:26 AM

No way the mugging was a fake. The woman's screams were all too real in the video. Thus, the low profile idea. It's just not a good idea to flaunt wealth these days.

Watch? The Hamilton "khaki King" quartz in stainless that I paid around $200 for back in 2003 (I think..not sure) is still functioning perfectly..on it's 4th or 5th battery now, can't really remember. An added benefit? It's more accurate than a rolex and isn't mugger bait. My dress? Clean...but nothing stylish. Right now I'm wearing a pair of Costco "dad jeans" and an off the box store shelf pocket T shirt with no logo. (Getting hard to find those, by the way.) New balance tennies. Not mugger bait...

Why the hell should I care what strangers think? One advantage of being an old fart...I don't feel the need to prove anything.

Yeah was exaggerating a bit for sport on both accounts, but I do follow this dress code "head to toe in all Costco" :), generally washed however. Not sure if my 2018 focus St counts as a nice daily though.

I mostly chimed in because I do love watches and have a fairly extensive collection, nothing showy or all that expensive however. Always a bit torn on Rolex they have tremendous history and make great watches. Recent market crazyness and hype has led to a bit of resentment though.

Thankfully the watch market is tanking so maybe we can all buy the watches we lusted over soon.

When I retired from racing and sold my stuff off, my thought was to buy myself a Daytona as a going away present.
I'm still sitting on a bunch of my gear and the watch plan went out the window with these crazy prices.
Maybe a "dark side of the moon" when I finally get around to it.

aschen 07-12-2022 11:34 AM

I think if you can wait 2 more years you can get that daytona at msrp, but I like the speedy more anyways......go pick her up
