In other words if you have the money to buy a Rolex you'll be wearing nicer clothes and carry yourself in a confident manner. Your personal grooming would also be above average. Someone wearing a fake sticks out like dogs balls IMO. Just sayin.

what a bunch of claptrap

I'm worth over the seven fig mark (which really isn't saying a lot these days) and I dress like a handy man except for the Sinn or Doxa on my wrist. Maybe I should have bought a sub a decade ago when they were under $5k but I had better things to put my money into. I went to Bobs Watches twice to check out a Milgauss and Sub and both times I put the Rolex on the counter next to my Doxa and said "meh".. and walked out.

There are lots of guys like Magnus Walker running around who are well into 7 or 8 figures and look like bums.

The Millionaire Next Door is a great read. Quite often, truly wealthy people don’t live lavishly with flashy cars or fancy watches, etc. Good book.

Bingo...I really think it's great to buy quality things you enjoy or use...but it's foolish to buy things to impress others. I worked pretty damned hard for what I've got, so don't understand spending for "status badge" items. The 911S was my main weakness...but it wasn't considered a "status" car when I bought it...the then new 930 was. The more sought after as a collectable the 911S became, the less I enjoyed it. Eventually, it became an albatross around my neck, one I am glad to be shed of. Beware of the "more stuff" syndrome...for the more stuff you have, the more stuff you have to take care of. Select your stuff carefully.

Reminds me of leaving church with mom on a long ago day, a couple leaving in a Cadillac..."Wow mom, he must have a lot of money." Mom: "Well, he used to." The message stuck...a good lesson on the value of "stuff".

So true, there is a retired attorney who lives in St Augustine, who literally dresses like a bum, looks like a bum, as he climbs into one of his Ferraris when leaving one of the bars downtown. Then there is my attorney, who also lives in St Augustine,

Who would come out of his, properly dressed, Rolex as well, and would climb into the bus above (he has actually had several of them over the years, we were actually featured in a college film about the lifestyle of those who go to endurance races years back, pictures of us on top of one of his old busses, and showing the bar he sat up with lots of good stuff and a humidor with, at that time. Illegal cigar (and Rum). That is his GT2 next to the bus.

How's this for different? The worlds thinnest watch (right now).

EDIT: 1.75mm - 0.069 inch thick... $1.75 million dollars and limited to 150 pieces. They're probably all sold by now.

My gf likes to impress others. Me? I'm like meh, I don't need to impress anyone. I guess for her, it's a Korean thing. I told her that is stupid because you are putting yourself out there as a target. With Covid tanking the economy/jobs, people are really struggling and some are very desperate.

FWIW, I do have some very expensive watches, but really don't wear them. Lately, I've been wearing a MoonSwatch a Speedy, and a couple Seikos. The Seikos are really GS but flies under the radar because people just see Seiko.

I sold both of my Rolex's, one owned since new, the other an older GMT. I wore the GMT pretty regularly but the thought of having $12k hanging on my wrist and not wanting to have the worry about losing it, getting mugged, etc. made me wear it less and less. I know my kids don't care so might as well buy some stocks or some parts for the 356 or 914. There are some nice niche brands out there making quality watches with nice movements. I bought a Christopher Ward dive watch and am pretty happy and put a net $20k in the bank.

Better stop driving your Porsches if you are that scared about being mugged, since they are worth a lot more than any Rolex I have seen.

porsche tech 07-14-2022 02:56 AM

Not sure if I could tell you if someone was even wearing a watch, let alone what brand it was. I do see most young people seem to rely on their phone for the time these days.

You must not have seen many Rolexes..

Bottom line...stay safe guys, try not to become a target. When travelling to 3rd world countries, or 3 world USA neighborhoods, leave the Rolex or Omega at home, strap on a Timex or Casio for telling time.

911boost 07-14-2022 09:34 PM

I have seen plenty and own a Deep Sea. The most clapped out 911 is worth more than it…..

I think that's fairly common in many/most Asian cultures from India to Japan and everything in between.

Is it just me, or is that watch ugly?

Sure, I think it's an amazing technical achievement, an incredible piece of engineering, and I'd love to see one. But, if I were watch shopping with a money-no-object approach, that isn't what I'd be looking at because I wouldn't want to wear it. With the relatively affordable watches I buy they have to look nice and be something I want to wear. Richard Mille watches are incredible in their mechanical design, but they sure don't look nice in my opinion.

aschen 07-15-2022 10:12 AM

RM is the worst of everything in the watch world to me.

Id certainly rather have the previous champ Bulgari ultra thin that doesnt need a separate tool to operate. A relative bargain at 400k I guess

It’s not just you, the thing is hideous. Richard Mille watches have always been odd looking but that one takes the cake.

Most of the new things in the watch world over the last 10 years has been focused towards buyers that wouldn’t know a good design if it slapped them in the face. Those that wallow in the high end of the collectible watch market today are largely idiots and that’s one of the reasons I sold off my entire watch collection.

911boost 07-15-2022 11:19 AM

^It is odd to me there are people that are in the "high end collectible" watch market. But I guess to each his own.
I got mine because I liked it and it will get passed down to my son.

javadog 07-15-2022 11:56 AM

I bought a Rolex Explorer from a dealer in Dallas about 20 years ago. Along with that watch, I bought two other 18 karat gold watches on straps, nothing terribly exotic but not a bad sale for the guy. I had been trying to buy a Milguass, because I worked in a field where that watch would have been useful but I couldn’t get any dealer to even so much as put me on a waiting list for one, because of all of the “look at me” narcissistic little ****heads that were trying to buy it at the time. So I gave up and bought the Explorer.

I was *****ing about this to the guy and he said that, you weren’t anything special to a watch dealer unless you routinely dropped a quarter million dollars on some useless little extravagance.

When I first started buying serious watches 40 years ago, that market didn’t exist. Nowadays, the sky’s the limit and there are thousands of buyers out there buying and selling a dozen watches a year. 20 grand here, 75 grand there, certain watches get hot for a while and everybody has to have one and it’s just gotten ridiculous.

**** those guys and **** Rolex for catering to the stupid little bastards.

911boost 07-15-2022 03:22 PM

I guess that’s no different than the car flippers, or the way Ferrari operates, and the direction Porsche is going….

I put my name on a list for a popular one and got it pretty quickly and if it was a gun store then maybe I’d drop $ there but I have no reason to buy jewelry.

The Rolex "Hulk" is a prime example. No one wanted one when they were first released, then the watch guys started talking about them and then suddenly they're hot. At one point they were trading for well over double retail. Nearly $40k for a SS watch?
