OR! I become significantly more awesome with the ability to run really fast like the Flash, turn green and muscular like the Hulk and shoot webs like Spider Man! I'd be the Spiflahulman... I'd be a household name.

NYC - they know what it's like to have their govt defense systems fail.

Are they being told to expect another defense systems failure?

Or is this just more "Fear the Pooty Rooski" of the day?

We've had some electrical safety violations/events here at work lately and in the spirit of "safety messages", etc., our management sent out a story about the Demon Core. Louis Slotin worked here for awhile...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon_core
We're actually putting up some monuments/signs/plaques here in Los Alamos for the workers who paid the price for the rest of the community to say "Huh, I guess we shouldn't do that..." Particularly with explosives we've learned more than a few things.

The Slotin building is part of the Manhattan Project National Historic Park - though most can't see it without permission and probably a clearance. Someday we'll get them open to the public.

On effects - truly, hiding indoors for a few days or a week works really well. Hunker down and let those really hot fission products burn off and for many it's survivable as long as you make it through the blast (flying things to put holes in you) and the fires (duh).

IDK if Glasstone's Effects of Nuclear Weapons is open source yet but you can get it in paperback from lots of places. It's very interesting, particularly as to how it explains scaling. (hint, 10x more yield is not 10x as bad)

Might be worth pursuing! Dudes that got dosed (occupational exposure, not bombing victim) half a century or more ago lived longer and more healthy lives than the average USAnian.

(that they were highly educated, had incredible health care for their time, and were highly paid had nothing to do with it of course - it was obviously thanks to their membership in the IPPu club)

[hint, the first "P" relates to urine]

Went to Navy nuke weps school in Los Alamos NM, years ago. Instructor told us in the event of a nuke war, especially an air drop weapon, just put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye. I was on a carrier, and we were told if there ever was a nuke attack, our ship might last about 45 minutes before being vaporized.

Yep. In most simulated scenarios the carriers are gone really, really soon. 45 min might be optimistic. It's the subs that will save us and hopefully scare the rest so that we can have at least a few more decades of global "peace".

I just imagine every disaster movie. zombie movie and alien attack movie coming true after a nuke hits any city. What is not obliterated and stayed safe will be overrun buy the mobs. Unless the national guard and every police officer remains on duty it will be chaos. There will be no stores to go to, so whatever food and water you have will be all you get for a while. Electricity and all utilities will be no more.

NYC is going to be one vast mob with that huge population. I just hope we pound any country into a glass wasteland that attacks us.

That assumes the ARDEC facility would be a target - not likely, especially with NYC (US financial center) and Lakehurst-Dix-McGuire relatively nearby. After all, Picatinny is a research, development and testing facility.

I'm slightly under 3 miles from Picatinny's main gate, and even worked there as a technical contractor for a short time many years ago.

Back to the main topic: If NYC is hit, IMHO there are really (2) scenarios:

1. A terrorist low-yield or "dirty" bomb where the effects are mostly localized (think another 9/11) and it is the aftermath/reaction that would be of the most concern to the overall general public.

2. A "classic" cold war kind of major high-yield strike, for which the only action (if you lived long enough) is to kiss one's a** goodbye.

I find that NYC bringing this up as a PSA at this time as particularly stupid, but expecting logical actions from a government bureaucracy is usually a bit too much to hope for.

Sounds like an average day in some places on the left coast today.

After looking at the PSA you're better off playing Fallout 3 on xbox for better information.

Yep. All RCTs know that magenta and yellow rope stops gamma radiation. On one side is "bad" and on the other side you're fine.

Most all the cops have families, and they are going to go home to be with their family, and try to protect themselves and family. Same for firemen and ambulance drivers. Some will try to do their job, but most will want to protect their own families first. Everyone understands why.

So you are on your own. If you are a prepper, you will be ready, but the invading hordes wanting your shelter and food and water will be difficult if not impossible to stop. Imagine a motorcycle gang on steroids, with nothing to loose and everything to gain by taking your stuff.

Until the Army gets there with troops and declares martial law will there be any civilization. If the bomb was just a terrorist, and a single attack, the rest of the country will come to help. In an all out war, the apocalypses has arrived.

You need a new PR guy, and to do some brain storming on a new name. Spiflahulman is NEVER going to be a household name. You'd be better off calling yourself "Kleenex", not that I'm suggesting that.
