Cellphone Question

Dropped my Moto G6 smartphone on the sidewalk last winter. With a plastic case, it held together well...even with a shattered back cover. It still works great..even with the bulging body.

I use TracFone unlimited plan and don't wish to switch phones or plans.

My question is...if I buy the same phone off of ebay, can I just remove my sim card and plug it into the new phone. Being a couple years old, I can find one for less than $50 unlocked. https://www.ebay.com/itm/125412640461?epid=245188102&hash=item1d332d06cd:g:kewAAOSws15izNa~

Or, should I just look for a cheaper used Moto G6 and swap back covers? Is that hard to do? (I've never tried it before.)

I have a Moto G6 too... I'd just put the SIM you have in another one.

^^^ Would that work right away?...or would I have to contact TracFone to complete it?

Notice in the pic...the electrical tape has held it together for 6 months now.

What are these phone back covers made of? There are small sand/glass crystals inside the phone case from the fracture.

You can get a new Moto G phone from Tracfone pretty cheap. I think mine was around $50.

^^^ I'm watching a G6 on ebay that is new @ $30 right now.
If it goes up much, I'll check Tracfone. I looked there yesterday and didn't see any.

Please tell me the back is bulging from being bent and not because the battery is bulging.

If the later stop using that thing immediately before the battery blows up and takes half your face with it.

^^^ I dunno....is that still a 'thing' that is happening? I noticed it starting to bulge a few weeks ago and no, it has not been bent.

I have never taken the back cover off because it contains the camera. The phone still charges as normal.

Yes.

It leaking or catching fire is more likely but exploding is not off the table.

I won the auction....it's supposed to be here by the weekend.

I'm hesitant to talk on it now!

New phone arrived yesterday. Put the battery in and charged it.
In the meantime, I took the sim card out of the old phone and took a closer look at the bloated battery.
It had a metallic-like jacket and was glued to the phone. I tried to pull it out and managed to tear a small piece of the jacket. Immediately, the bloated battery was back to the right size and the phone works great.
I may keep using it and have the new one for a back-up.

OK that's now much worse.

A lithium ion battery that is leakiing gas can cause all manner of medical issues including in severe cases a pulmonary embolism.

THROW THAT ****ING THING AWAY.

I didn't want to say it, but... A friend of mine is a hostie, a trolley dolly, and she said cellphones with cracked glass are a real concern on planes. She elaborated by saying when air gets near the lithium battery they can go up in flames.

Yep..I'll prob junk it tomorrow...I finished setting up the new one.

The funny thing is both phones are the same model and the battery is different. The new one is a solid chunk that slips into the phone. The old one has a couple wires that disappear into the phone and I see no way to replace it.

I find it hard to believe how good the Moto phones are. Mine was less than $50 and I like it way better than the iphone it replaced. Yes, the Iphone had a ton of storage but I do not need storage. The Moto does everything else just as well.

^^^ Agree...I can't see the benefit of paying $500 or more for a cellphone.
The Moto will do everything that I need it for and this last one I bought was $50 shipped.

Plus...my bill is $20.42 for 3 months of service with data.
