The watch industry is the same as with ridiculously expensive women's purses. They appeal to the customer's inner drive to status. Many derive their perceived status through owning expensive items solely because they are expensive. -as long as it is widely known that the items are expensive.

Funny that so many are smart enough to make the money to buy... but still out of touch enough to be drawn in.

Here's a rare look at Rolex GMT internals (Aug 23, 2022). Most of the detail & finishing work on the movement will only ever be seen by a watch maker. They really are well built and much better than anything made in Asia IMO. Yes they're expensive but like a lot of things in life "you get what you pay for".
