My friends call me, Top
|
Nope, I had it and enjoyed it but nothing is forever. I am now putting my classic car up for sale, too. This way I can still get a chance to enjoy a couple other brands before my car time is up. Honestly, I am done with wrenching. I just do not enjoy it any more.

I sometimes think about getting another air cooled but I got too spoiled by my 991 GT3.. I totally get the visceral feel of the earlier cars and that's what draws me back to them... or so I thought.. I've explained to my GF about how cool the older cars are etc but I got contacted out to a do a huge punch list on an SC that's been sitting for 10+ years and when I got it driving last week, I took her for a ride and it was dismal at best.. Then I realized that it was purely nostalgia that draws me back to them.. While that is a powerful pull, just can't justify the cost of an older 911 when the newer ones are FAR superior..

I am only 48, but have been seriously considering letting go of my 76 911s ever since I went through reconstructive surgery on my left Achilles tendon. Ever since, that clutch seems real heavy. The value of the 911 could go a long way on the restoration of my 62 fairlane and my 86 K1500.

Well anyone that says a 930 is less than adequate isn’t keeping up. Easy to get 500hp it’s just a little $$$. 500 in a 2600 lb car?

I'll buy a 993 Turbo as soon as they drop back below $65K.

The plan is to keep my humble SC for as long as I can drive. After that it will probably go to my eldest daughter. Over the years I've owned, bought, sold and enjoyed every Porsche on "my list" but that list isn't long (4 including my current 1978 SC). I've been thinking about an early Turbo but they're truly stupid money in Aus.
The next car on my list is a Rolls-Royce Camargue "IF" I can find the right car. I've been looking for about 15 years and came really close late last year but the car was in another state and it was sold before I could arrange travel/accommodation. What are they worth? That depends but most of the Australian delivered cars are not advertised. The owner puts the word out via the clubs and they change hands "privately". You either love them or hate them. IMO they are one of the most desirable Roll-Royce's of all time. Low production numbers and truly hand built. The last of the line. "Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward" would fully approve. ![]()

Thats exactly how I feel. There are other things I'd rather get. I've toyed with selling my Ducati. It's the Paul Smart model. They have gone up significantly in the 14 years I've owned it. The problem is If I sell it, I'll never get another one. It's just not a 25K riding experience to me.

If I had the money and space I wouldn’t hesitate to get a Longhood, G50, 993 and a 997.2 GT3. Yeah prices are high but I don’t see them tanking so it’s like parking money in the bank with no return on investment at this point. But I get to experience them!
Reality for me is that there aren’t any other cars out there that give me the same driving experience or visual pleasure. I did buy a really nice 06 JCW not that long ago which was fun but it never connected with me the way the older Porsche’s do so I ended up selling it and I really don’t regret it. Bottom line is that certain cars speak to all of us and we all have a certain threshold we are willing to pay experience them.

I like having one around.
I feel like most newer cars are built for big guys and mine fits like a glove. Until the gleaming alloy air cars blow me up, I’ll likely be in one….

Boxsters are still priced where 911s used to be. I bought my ‘00S from the original owner back in 2019 for $8900. It only had 62k miles.

Yeah, I'm still kicking myself for not following through on the impulse buy $5900 Boxster S that I saw on CL. But then again, if that had been taking up space in my garage, I wouldn't have purchased the 964. C'est la vie.

I paid $41K for my 1992 964 turbo in 2007 with 30k miles on it, and thought that was a lot. I sold it in 2011 for $51k with 55,000 miles. I was pretty pleased with myself, and the about 6 months later it was worth 3 times that. I had asked for right of first refusal and in 2019 the owner called and offered it to me for $160,000 and I politely said no thank you, because just like Michael with his Paul Smart, I do not see the value. I would rather drive and experience something else.
Now would I pay what my 997.2 GT3RS is fetching now, nope, but I don’t have to worry about that as I own one. I’m sure I will sell it someday and get something else, but the 997 is a sweet spot I think. I could see myself in a 930 at some point, but who knows. |

Sold my 88 cab a couple months ago and bought a 22 WRX. Been using it as a daily and it is a hoot! Way faster and more comfortable than the cab. My dog loves it, so that is all that matters. Finally sold my 77 930 last week as I never drove it because we have too many ****ty drivers in Honolulu, plus all the tourist in their rentals, oblivious to the world. Picked up a 2015 Macan S this morning as my hauler (the gf has my Alfa). Spent all day cleaning up the paint as it was a mess. It looks much better now, but still has a bit to go. I do miss the 911s, but what I do not miss is climbing up out of the car.
