Are there any home repairs you’d leave to the experts?

I have a leaky sewer clean out at the side of my house. The drain tube running inside my garage wall has a leak and I can’t get to the outer half of it without breaking the stucco. I sprayed flex seal as a stop gap measure inside the garage but it didn’t take since I can’t get to the whole leak. Really to fix it right, the tube should be spliced into and put back together. It’s our poop and pee but it’s still nasty. I’m calling a plumber.

Yea, sewer work is best left to pros. Our sewer line had a ground shift and knocked it sideways just a bit. Slow draining sewers ain’t good.

They had to dig down to the main which is 6 feet deep. It took a mini excavator and a pro at the controls to do it.

Money well spent.

Lots of them...roofing tops the list.

Septic and plumbing hold no terrors for me because I did a lot of both on this place. I helped wire the house and did my garage, but the Codes are different now. I have a guy for that.
Siding, roof, doors, windows and pre-fabricated chimney: no sweat. After all, I built the darned place.

Best

My list gets longer every year.
Sewer work is on top. Anything past a clogged drain, I'm out.
Roofing. The current house roof is 10/12 pitch. I hate going up there.
I helped with the roof on the old place, I figure it's a job you do once so that you appreciate other's work.

I'll also add drywall work. I was going to hang it myself in a room in the basement. After watching the two young guys come in and knock it out in no time, I knew there's no way I should ever do that again. Funny, after the young guys carried the sheets in and hung it, the older guys came in to tape it, finish it, texture it and finish it.

The older you get, the less you do...

I’m a jack of all trades and master of none.

I’m a homebuilder, so we’ve had multiple new homes the last 30 years. We’ve never stayed long enough to do repairs or real maintenance for that matter.

I do a lot of quick/different things at work, but if it’s hot/dirty/dangerous/etc. work, I let the pros do it.

Anything to do with the furnace, water pump or main electric box I write the check.

sewer/waste is one of those things that I would pay for if it's an option, because it's disgusting.

I actually did have a clog in the main line between the house and the septic tank last year. I had to crawl under the house and use an improvised tool to fix the problem (I'm guessing maybe roots).

It was thoroughly unpleasant, but it had to be done and had to be done "right now".

I'm good with doing just about anything around the house, plumbing, electrical, whatever. But there are times, usually when the job is too big, that I'll write a check (which I hate because it's hard to find a guy that's going to do it right.

Honestly, most of them these days….same with cars. I’ve just lost interest in major repairs of any kind. At one point in time, I’d tackle anything….not anymore. Not cause I can’t, I just don’t want to.

I just had 2 pine trees cut down. Both over 80'. One leaning toward the house. No way I was about to take those down myself.

I can do the absolute basic stuff. Replace an igniter in the furnace or a capacitor in the AC compressor.

Oh, I can change the furnace filter and adjust the furnace humidifier.

I have added a simple circuit or two but that's across the whole of my life.

I can change wall switches and plugs without killing the juice only to keep my man card.

Good call. I don't know what the actual pitch was of the roof at our old house, maybe 5/12 or 4/12. I was pretty comfortable crawling up and walking around on the roof. I installed some weather station stuff up there and it was 2 stories up. But that's different from replacing it. Not to mention the heat.

Our new house has a 7/12 pitch, and getting up on that (again 2 stories up) was not something that I'd want to do again.

Farck that! 10/12, no fargin' way. The roof on this place is 7/12, and I have been up there and didn't like it. And I don't have a problem with heights.

Here in NJ, you need a freakin permit and inspection for every stupid thing you can imagine. It's ridiculous.

However, there's one thing that they removed from that list recently....

Roofs.... Probably one of the most important structures on a home. You no longer need a permit and inspection..

Sounds just as dumb as us out here but roof without inspection? How dumb can this be?

Any major wiring project.
Not confident enough in my own work when it involves something that might burn my house down.

Wait, sewer clean out should not leak, ever. You may have a clog developing down stream? Water and waste should flow out of the sewer without ever backing up putting any pressure onto the clean out. Clean out normally sits higher then the drain pipes themselves. I call the pros.

Yeah, I don't do waste water. Never have, call them. Too dirty.

My best friend replaced the drains under his house himself. Got quote, looked at it, went and rented a sawzall, cut out all the old stuff, laid it down in the back yard and used it as a template for the new stuff. Paid him $1700 for 6 hours work, he figured. Less the cost of materials and rental on the saw, that is what it would have cost. Used the existing hangars.

Some jobs I would do, some, not so much.

Mostly a time thing, I like fixing stuff
