"I had one just like that, except ......"

Why do people say "I had a car just like that, except it was blue instead of red and was a stick instead of an automatic." Or "my Girlfriend looked just like that except she was a redhead and was alot shorter."

Once you add the except, it's not just like the original subject.....maybe similar, but not just like it.

stevej37 08-23-2022 09:27 AM

You are right, except I have my own opinion.
I would also like my vanilla bean ice cream now.:)

GH85Carrera 08-23-2022 09:29 AM

I get that a LOT about my El Camino. Lots of folks tell me their dad or uncle had one "just like that" only it was a different color, and usually that it was not in such nice condition as mine.

Evidently a lot of kids have ridden in the storage compartment behind the seats. No one has even been in mine.

VINMAN 08-23-2022 09:32 AM

"It's the same exact thing, but completely different...."

.

id10t 08-23-2022 09:34 AM

Variations like different colors, etc. I can give a pass to - maybe. Depends on what the variant part(s) are and what item is being discussed.

gacook 08-23-2022 09:38 AM

Because commonality is one of the easiest ways to connect with a stranger, and we are a social animal.

Right. In the case of something like Glenn's Elky, if Glenn has an '86, and someone else says they had an '86 el camino but in a different color (and they could probably be excused if they had an '85 since those were pretty much the same), I could see that.

It might be different if they saw his '86 Elky and said "I had one just like that, but it had a trunk and said 'Monte Carlo' on the fender." :D

My 1969 Mustang Mach1 is debadged, which really throws them off. I had one guy tell me his brother had a Camaro just like that, and when I said actually it’s a Mustang, he said No it isn’t.
I now look forward to these conversations and enjoy going along with them, always agreeing with them no matter what they say. Particularly with the guys that point out that such and such is not “correct” for my car as built.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1661278757.jpg

Ken, Of course it's "correct". It's your car and it's done the way you want it to be. That makes it perfectly "correct".

By the way, that's what I told a PCA gurhu at the '78 Aspen parade after he used "incorrect" on my car...didn't like that I'd gone to H-1's instead of keeping the USA required sealed beams, among other things.

Good opening post Michael...yep, I suppose we've all heard that one.

Cool story

LWJ 08-23-2022 10:58 AM

Yes. More pics of the camaro.

I got that a bunch when I had a 65 MGB. It was back in the chrome bumper, lower suspension, non-smogged era. People told me about their POS 1980 MGB... Yikes.

That is cool. Amazing it was never stripped for parts, totaled, rusted out, or "overhauled" and slammed with 24 inch 18 inch wide wheels with a 10,000 watt stereo and other horrid mods.

Cool story

That's fantastic.

My first car as a teen was a '65 impala. I'd LOVE to have the car in the video! That is one (of many) dream cars of mine. I'd love the pale yellow or a blue (mine was blue).

gsxrken 08-23-2022 12:00 PM

Haha good stuff. Just remembered another classic. The 1969 fastbacks had a one year only, non-functional duct on the rear quarters just behind the doors. You can see it in my photo. Anyway, one guy once came up to me and said: “You know those scoops are fake, right?” And I said, “No, they’re real- you can touch them for yourself if you’d like”. Stopped him in his tracks.
This was before I adopted my “agree with everything they say” strategy.

LOL!!

I definitely have to remember that one.

BTW, a a recent local car show a fellow was showing his extremely clean red '69 mach 1, having a front spoiler, a 428 Cobra Jet, a shaker scoop, Hurst t-handle shifter, rear window louvers and a wing-type real spoiler. After admiring the car and talking for a bit I asked why he put some features normally associated with a Boss 302 on his mach 1.

His answer was great: "Because I like the way it looks."

herr_oberst 08-23-2022 12:48 PM

And thats all that should matter. Except he needs to get rid of that CJ stripe down the side; ugly as sin!

ROFLMAO! on so many levels.

sugarwood 08-23-2022 02:58 PM

Is this even a question?

"I also had an air cooled 911 except it was yellow"
is not the same as
"I also had an air cooled 911 except it was a Camry"

How stupid are people?

oldE 08-23-2022 03:26 PM

Remember the wisdom of George Carlin, " Think about how stupid the average person is. Half the people in the world are dumber than that."

I had a 69 mustang fastback just like that. It was even red!

Edit. Too bad we didn’t have phones/cameras back then like we do now. I would have a lot of pictures of my cars.

Edit 2: Thank God we didn’t have phones/cameras back then. I would have a lot of pictures of me doing stupid ****.

Edit 3: Is that a 69 or 70? 69‘s had four headlights and 70s had two headlights.

1: I honestly don't remember the number of headlights it had. If it didn't have any headlights or turn signals in the grille I would have remembered because the lack of either of those in the grille is a Boss 302 thing.

2: If you look closely, there appears to be the edge of a round headlight bezel visible at the edge of the grille.

3: I am not at all sure that it still has the original grille.

4: Aren't the rear quarter side scoops a 1 year '69 thing?

A930Rocket 08-23-2022 06:21 PM

I think you are right. It’s been so long, I thought it was more towards the outside near the other headlights.

My 69 had the faux vents in the rear quarters. Fold down rear seats too. Another car I wish I kept.

A guy looked at my truck and actually said, "I had one just like that, only it was a Ford."

Tervuren 08-24-2022 08:04 AM

I had a confusing exchange at a traffic light where the mid 30's redhead next lane over was wanting to know "If it was a turbo".

They only made my Jaguar as NA and Supercharged, no Turbo.
After some confusion turns out they thought my XK was a Supra.

I sometimes comtemplate how much work it would be to make up Toyota and Supra trim for it.
I have wrapped the written badges in a brushed finish that makes the text difficult to spot/read.

If she was hot ( and my wife wasn't with me)

" Why yes.......yes it is!"

bkreigsr 08-24-2022 09:47 AM

....and then...they grab their phone to show you 30-40 pictures of their car that was 'just like yours'.....

I hate to be rude - but c'mon...I've got better things to do...

When I had the 924S, I had several folks peg it as a Mazda RX 7.
No biggie. Except the Porsche actually had leg room. :D

How stupid does one need to be to not understand a red car is not the same as a blue car?

Tervuren 08-25-2022 04:06 AM

The redhead had a hippster beard and was riding a Harley.

Wow, haven't seen that picture in years. That's when I would actually sport tour with the Paul Smart. I was much more flexible then. Lol. Ironically, I am literally riding thru that same area later today on my GS. I'm on the 2nd day of a 10 day ride.

Boy, tell me about it... I used to circumnavigate Washington on that old Super Sport, even going as far from home as Montana and Nor Cal. Those days are behind me. I just don't fold up as small as I used to, so it has become my "morning constitutional" bike. I'll run a tank through it in the morning before lunch and call it a day.

Fortunately, however I have another bike just like it that I can still ride for days on end. Granted, it's black instead of red, it has a nice tall windshield, floorboards, saddle bags, and a really comfortable seat. Other than that, though, it's just like it. :D

I've never ridden a motorcycle. That gas tank looks like it could be a huge pain in the gut. I feel like most sport bikes have a smoother curve to them.

So how does that think compare comfort-wise to something like this.
