"I had one just like that, except ......"
Why do people say "I had a car just like that, except it was blue instead of red and was a stick instead of an automatic." Or "my Girlfriend looked just like that except she was a redhead and was alot shorter."
Once you add the except, it's not just like the original subject.....maybe similar, but not just like it.

You are right, except I have my own opinion.

I get that a LOT about my El Camino. Lots of folks tell me their dad or uncle had one "just like that" only it was a different color, and usually that it was not in such nice condition as mine.
Evidently a lot of kids have ridden in the storage compartment behind the seats. No one has even been in mine.

Variations like different colors, etc. I can give a pass to - maybe. Depends on what the variant part(s) are and what item is being discussed.

It might be different if they saw his '86 Elky and said "I had one just like that, but it had a trunk and said 'Monte Carlo' on the fender." ![]()

My 1969 Mustang Mach1 is debadged, which really throws them off. I had one guy tell me his brother had a Camaro just like that, and when I said actually it’s a Mustang, he said No it isn’t.
I now look forward to these conversations and enjoy going along with them, always agreeing with them no matter what they say. Particularly with the guys that point out that such and such is not “correct” for my car as built. ![]()

Ken, Of course it's "correct". It's your car and it's done the way you want it to be. That makes it perfectly "correct".
By the way, that's what I told a PCA gurhu at the '78 Aspen parade after he used "incorrect" on my car...didn't like that I'd gone to H-1's instead of keeping the USA required sealed beams, among other things. Good opening post Michael...yep, I suppose we've all heard that one.

Yes. More pics of the camaro.
I got that a bunch when I had a 65 MGB. It was back in the chrome bumper, lower suspension, non-smogged era. People told me about their POS 1980 MGB... Yikes. |

My first car as a teen was a '65 impala. I'd LOVE to have the car in the video! That is one (of many) dream cars of mine. I'd love the pale yellow or a blue (mine was blue).

Haha good stuff. Just remembered another classic. The 1969 fastbacks had a one year only, non-functional duct on the rear quarters just behind the doors. You can see it in my photo. Anyway, one guy once came up to me and said: “You know those scoops are fake, right?” And I said, “No, they’re real- you can touch them for yourself if you’d like”. Stopped him in his tracks.
This was before I adopted my “agree with everything they say” strategy.

I definitely have to remember that one. BTW, a a recent local car show a fellow was showing his extremely clean red '69 mach 1, having a front spoiler, a 428 Cobra Jet, a shaker scoop, Hurst t-handle shifter, rear window louvers and a wing-type real spoiler. After admiring the car and talking for a bit I asked why he put some features normally associated with a Boss 302 on his mach 1. His answer was great: "Because I like the way it looks." |
