What do you think porsche is saying?

About builders like Singer or Guntherwerks?

They'd be watching them but I don't think they're really concerned unless there's "a breach of copyright".

FWIW: Singer got "a letter" about their off road 911. Understandable considering the Porsche branding on the lower side.

RUF has been supplied unfinished car bodies and other parts by Porsche, so don't think they should mind too much.

It raises their profile, and the Singer cars are second hand ones, so Porsche has already had the sale.

Wondering if in a few decades we are going to look at them as old gemballas. Strosek. Slant nose WB conversion

Sooooooo many decent original cars gone

I read an article a couple years ago that Porsche was very aware of the popularity and allure of Singer cars. Singer can offer a car for a lot of money that Porsche is unable to build today (emissions and noise standards, CAFE, etc.). It's one of the reasons Porsche has been offering more special editions and exclusive models than ever before.

I’ve seen that same statement repeated in many places but I don’t think that’s true. Every RUF car with a RUF VIN that I have seen has also had a crossed out Porsche VIN, implying that it was a completely built car when RUF acquired it. It seems to me that RUF bought finished cars, then dismantled them and rebuild them.

FWIW…

I think it's good advertising for them and Porsche is all about profit.

I believe Ruf gets body in white and builds cars from them. I believe Ruf ALSO gets full cars and builds them, maybe that was back in the beginning. I also remember reading that if you had a 911, you could send it to Ruf and they would "upgrade" it. I don't know if they change the VIN in those situations, but that's also possible.

I suspect the VIN plate is added to the body early in the process, which would explain the crossed out Porsche VIN.

From memory... There's a family connection of some kind between RUF and Porsche. I don't know what that connection is but the two companies always been "friendly".

That “body in white” claim started out in Road and Track article, if I recall correctly. It has since been repeated by countless others. I think it’s in the Paul Frere books as well.

If you send your car to RUF to get modified, or to one of their dealers back in the day, you didn’t get a different VIN. I went to their Chicago dealer back in the 1980s or early 90s, to look at a BTR. Didn’t end up buying it.

Like I said, I’ve never seen one without a Porsche VIN. I’ve looked at more than a few, I know people that own them.

I suspect it is much like AMG and Mercedes. Mercedes liked it so much they bought AMG and now it is part of the company.

Ruf and Singer are both good for Porsche.
