Great project! You'll have fun. My garage is 32x25. I thought it would be expansive enough, but I've managed to clutter it up enough I feel it's a bit cramped now.

herr_oberst 09-05-2022 08:03 AM

Can't wait to watch the progress of THIS shop.

If I could offer one suggestion, it would be to build a 10 x 12 or so shed somewhere handy that you can store stuff you don't want in your brand new shop. The mower, the chain saw, the patio furniture, the long tools....(I noticed the little red shed had to go...)...This would be the time to do it, with all the construction going on.

Very nice, IS! If you haven't checked these folks out already (I am guessing you have), they have a lot of insight:

Keep us updated. I am going to concrete the last tobacco barn next year.

I have ridiculous amount of garage and storage space and I feel the same way:cool:

I have been shedding the weight this summer and giving a ton of stuff away...my rule of thumbs is five years: If I haven't used it, give it away with a two time usage clause or sell it.

daepp 09-05-2022 08:37 AM

Congratulations buddy - keep up the great progress!

daepp 09-05-2022 08:38 AM

(Ps - one thing I wish I’d added was a urinal…)

bob deluke 09-05-2022 10:22 AM

Nice beginning. Did you install infloor heat? Standing on cold concrete floor is a killer on legs and knees. Especially in the winter. Looking good otherwise…

Bill Douglas 09-05-2022 11:10 AM

Nice and spacious.

Some skylights might be nice. Hard to beat natural light, and you won't need to turn the lights on every time you go in to grab something.

IS300 09-05-2022 02:20 PM

Yes the red shed was a POS... Had to go ,will get another after the finally inspection,
I have thought of urinal... the toilet is not on the plans no heated floor,
I'll be lucky if I have the money to finish it this year.

Heat and AC.

And lighting…lots of lighting. And a refrigerator. Yes a refrigerator. Very important.

Absolutely concur. Except, I would make it one of those trough type, floor to shoulder height, where aim is not an issue.

rockfan4 09-06-2022 12:16 PM

How thick is the concrete slab? Did you make it any thicker or add any extra rebar where the lifts will go, especially the two post lift?

When they poured the floor for my back garage, they added fiberglass strands to the concrete mix, they said that way they didn't need rebar across the whole thing. There's still bars around the edge in the footing. He also poured it so the edge was about 4" above the floor, so the walls sit up, and you can hose it out without worrying about getting the bottom of the walls all wet.

The inspector almost made me tear up my slab. He said the new code was two 8 foot grounding rods at least 8 feet apart, and tied into the rebar in the slab. He let it slide since that rule was so new (garage is now 8 years old or so), and I just have one grounding rod like we've always done.

1. Plan for heat and AC
2. Shop air compressor outside of the garage
3. Windows for cross flow ventilation
4. Insulate the crap out of it
5. Lots of outlets with at least one 220 volt
6. Lots of lighting
7. Ceiling or wall mounted fans
8. Drop lights on reels from the ceiling
9. At least one heavy duty work bench
10. Wall and base cabinets for storage

Have fun 😊

If woodworking... install a system to collect sawdust. My buddy had it in NY and it was pretty dang cool.

Captain Ahab Jr 09-06-2022 01:46 PM

Is that your house in the background?

If it is, then you've sized your shop right as it looks bigger than your house

Too late for you, but in my woodworking shop, I had a trench layed out in the foundation that ran from a wall over to the middle of the room. The trench was about 12" wide x 8" deep. I've got my dust collection and power running to the table saw laying in it and coming up under the saw.

Good size. Consider the single post lifts. They open up a lot of footprint and you can walk under them if you're under 6'3". I have a 4 post in another garage and I much prefer the single post. They're about twice the cost but well worth it. MaxJax is nice too for regular stuff if you're fine sitting on a rollie chair. It does the job and you can easily move them out of the way to open up more space. Split system AC/heat all the way. Mini tank water heaters work well (the type you hang on the wall). Polyaspartic floor coating is great if the floor is constantly exposed to sunlight. Otherwise go with standard epoxy. If you flake the floor do not do what I did. Go with a lighter color because if I drop something it takes forever to find it :)

I wish I had the space for a shop. I will settle for my 3 car oversized garage.

The one feature of this house that put me over the top, was the bathroom in the garage out in the garage. It is just wonderful to be able to wash my hands, or even my face if I am mowing. No tracking up the house.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1662580387.JPG

No room for a full lift, but I love my scissor lift. The work area on the far side of the car is just wonderful.

Good luck with your garage. I am jealous. I am super happy with our house and my garage. My wife and I agreed this is our forever home. I will leave in a wheel chair to the old folks home, or feet first on a gurney.

Wifey wants to move because our place has become really busy since the COVID invasion to our lake.
I told her I need 100 g's for a garage if there isn't one. She agreed ..... for now. lol

Just 10ft. The lift is max 48 inches. The 911 can go to the stops of the lift. My El Camino has to stop when the the roof would hit the light for the garage door opener. The Macan gets high enough to easily change the oil.

I LOVE my scissors lift.

IS300 09-09-2022 04:05 PM

14 foot low side 16 on the high side.
house is bigger,
I like the single lift!
Music will be loud!
will post pics after the weekend, getting the last wall up.

Makes for a large concrete bill! In the long run you may like it.

need help on choosing lifts... help

rfuerst911sc 12-16-2022 05:17 AM

I purchased a used Ammco 7k two post lift for my man cave garage . It is made by Challenger it says so on the decals . If I were to do it over again I would go for a 9k or a 10k . Why ? I have a extended cab diesel dually that weighs around 7400 lbs and I get nervous putting her on my lift .

I basically only lift the truck about 10-12 inches high and support with multiple jack stands . All other vehicles in house I have no concerns going full lift height . In a perfect world I would have a 2 post and a 4 post 😋 . Just depends on your needs and fleet diversity 😁 . Buying local is a plus , if you get in a jamb on install or have a need for service it's nice to have someone local to assist .

Scott Douglas 12-16-2022 08:29 AM

WE need to see pics of the space you're trying to fill up now.

Baz 12-16-2022 04:27 PM

If I ever do one mine will have some killer landscaping to enhance it. Exotic palms and Bromeliads as a start. Maybe some orchids & Crotons....Hawaiian Ti Plants.

I'm in the tropics though but I'm sure Utah has some suitable material that would work!

Congrats and good luck!

wdfifteen 12-16-2022 04:44 PM

Surface mount the breaker panel. I'm kicking myself for having it mounted between the studs on my shop. Adding circuits that I never dreamed I would need is a pain.

Around here there always seem to be a few commercial quality ones being sold second hand for cheap. Garages going bust :(

Or a scissor lift like a Bendpak. A good thing about the scissor lift is you can move it around as you better plan out your space usage.

911 Rod 12-19-2022 08:05 AM

I wouldn't buy a used lift from a shop. It has been used more times in 1 week than you would in a lifetime. Plus it will be really dirty.
