Porsche product development engineers sort of ok

Door lock actuator on my Cayenne has been bad for a while and all of sudden got worse, truck throwing a lot of codes that might have been a result with the added bonus of the alarm going off after stopping and walking away, locked or unlocked. Nice sunny day to tackle what was supposed to be tough job. With a few good threads on RL and factory manual and YT, wasn't bad at all and I appreciate their modular approach like someone actually thought it about from cost to manufacture, assemble and repair.

Door panel off in 5 minutes or less.

Entire window and door electro and mechanical unit

Door shell. Super light. An early 911 door is much heavier

Wow, cool that the door comes apart like that. Usually anything inside a door is an absolute bear to deal with. I'm 99% certain that my '08 Boxster isn't like that.

I've always been impressed with the engineering (including for repair work) of the Porsches that I've had to deal with. I also did a couple of simple things on Mercedes that were probably early/mid 90s that were similarly well thought out.

Any problems rehanging the door?

No thanks, I definitely prefer fishing loose wires out of the inside of my door panel so I can pull them through and jam the into the back of my power window switches half-blind with a cover that won't stay out of the way and also while checking my wiring diagram and holding up the door panel.

Doing that job on a G body Carrera sucked balls if I remember correctly.

Very interesting how it all came apart. Neat thread, thanks Shaun.

Yea, but a G body 911 never threw a code to the computer!

Found some rust at the base seam of the door Paul so I'm media blasting that and laying down some epoxy primer tomorrow. I expect it will go back on ok with the exception of the cable end going into the door handle. But we'll see.

Yeah, scraping the hell out of your knuckles doing anything inside a 911 door blows.

This is my first truly digital vehicle, don't count the 2007 BMW which is more analog. It has never let me down in 18K miles (now at 148K) but it has been glitchy here and there. Some day I'll post a full review. Net net is I love the truck (2010 GTS) but my 2007 328i M Sport (246K miles) is a significantly better built vehicle in probably every aspect over the Cayenne. The BMW is closer to an impact bumper 911, not sure what the Cayenne is closer to without insulting it. It is an amazing "can only have one" vehicle.
