Here's a long shot query ....

Anybody know anything about these Everest base camp trips?

Looks okay, I guess. I've heard horror stories about some tours, but this one may be just fine. It seems pretty inexpensive. How high up have you been? You get up to 17,000 feet. Some people can't handle that even after acclimating.

I wouldn't climb beyond base camp and it's only one night there. I've been to 14,000 a couple of times and it would be awesome to do this. It does mighty cheap tho. It's on my Walter Middy dream list.

If you wanna get busy living instead of getting busy dying, I’d say it is a reasonable tactic to not climb Mt Everest.

I get a huge thrill from climbing onto my roof. I could die with any mis-step.
I think it's about the same as Everest.

He's taking a bus tour to Everest Base Camp at 5000meters, not climbing Everest.

Like there’s a difference?

I’m thinking, and this is just my opinion, base camping or whatever is allot like ice fishing.

Both activities bring up two questions: Why? And ‘Why?’ again.

A chance to wake up in Nepal in the morning at 170000 feet with a clear view of the summit of Mt Everest closer than your'll ever be to it in your life would be pretty spectacular. But things like this are like music. We all have different likes, and there's no wrong answer.

Everest Base Camp By Car? WTF????

My wife and myself actually signed up ten years ago for a HIKE up to and beyond EBC...as a "wilderness medicine" CME for her and photo journey for me - but we ended up buying a house instead. Great house, great deal...so a better choice for us - and although we have lots of hiking/climbing under our belts, we are starting to slow up just a bit as we approach our late 60's.

Years ago, during my first ever photo-assignment as a 15 year old documenting the Dartmouth Winter Outward Bound program...I had been inspired by Willi Unsoeld (one of the instructors) who'd captivated us with stories of his exploits on Everest - including his pioneering feat (with his friend Dr. Tom Hornbein) of tackling Everest's West Ridge.

But now...EBC by car? And what's next...a cable car to the summit of Everest?

There's always been a road from the north (China/Tibet) side. From Nepal, it's a long trek on foot.

And only go to base camp if you are in very good health. A friend of mine went there with a group of people and a German guy died.

Appears to be really cheap.
Wife wanted me to go on a trip north and camp on the tundra for 5 days.
$20,000.00 each!

So much for that. To get to the top of Everest, it costs about $100K for a guided trip. That's why I won't do it. That, and the 40 below temps, 120 mph winds, avalanches, falling towers of ice in the Khumbu Icefield, and the lack of oxygen above the Death Zone. I'm happy on my little 14,000-foot hills.
