i'm at the point where i get more enjoyment out of the car while it's in the garage, than when i do drive it.
my supposition: the road leads to a for sale sign. at some point in time. :)

Whatever Porsche is next for me will either be a Targa or Intermeccanica Convertible.

I loved my 356 Nothchback but the sight lines for me were horrible in terms of peripheral vision Great, fun car to drive.

When we move to South Carolina I'll probably get back into it. We just finished designing a garage apartment for the property and I'll have the time to dedicate to a project.

Not gonna rain on your parade just to be mean, but do drive one first ? Those repros are based on a VW pan if I recall... Doesn't feel anywhere like driving a 356 sadly. More like a Karmann ghia cab which I owned, that is why i say this - not the same! I think if you drove one blindfolded (on a parking lot) you'd know in a 2 seconds it's not a porsche. Those cars seem to have short ownership stints and lots of them being resold, I think that is why. Anyway if you really like them, cool, just a heads up and a vote for a targa if only in terms of resale value. I miss my 356s because sure they are so cute, but mostly because of how they felt, so solid...

Great perspective...I have not driven one but I'll find a way.

I am a Targa guy through and through.

Thanks again. I'll find a ride in a replica.

In a similar vein, my neighbor used to have a repro 550 also VW based. Now I can't say I've driven a real one ever - but man that thing scared the bejesus out of me in how it handled ;-) I vowed never to consider a repro except possibly a thunder-ranch (?) 904 , those look like they are upsized but identical in engineering ! And rare..

For a while, as I clung to the illusion I may be able to buy a 356 again (LOL), I had several internet searches going on several sites.. the repro results outnumbered the real cars 10 to 1... Nobody seemed to keep them. And frankly for the money (not insignificant or low enough that you don't care) I did not see the value (combined with having to answer NO to "is it real?'). Now I'm sure to piss off a repro owner, my apologies in advance, it's a personal choice - I'm just saying IF you owned a 356 prior, you're gonna notice the difference. And any investment you make subsequently on a real car will return $, not as much if at all on a repro IMO.

I have owned several 911 Turbos, last one was an 88 Turbo. Had an 83 along with an 86. I miss the last one a lot, wish I had not sold. Getting a smidge older. When the kids wrap up college in under 2 years, gonna order a brand new one along with all the comforts. Ice Grey Metallic with Bordeaux Red interior. Have built it many times online.

Now that is a real Porsche. ^^^

Still partial to them. Have 6 currently, need to thin the heard soon though.

The brand represents about 80% of the cars we see in the shop. Will never not be partial to them...

Cheers

The Intermeccanica cars are far from usiing VW pans as a base. If you're interested in one as a possibility, check out their website. Used ones that come up are snapped up instantly.

Beautiful!

Former IMSA president Scott Atherton used to live 4 properties south of me in a new home they had built about 3 years ago. I met him when he and his wife took their dogs for walks and would invariably come by my place. On the subject of Porsches, I once asked him what he had, and he said he had a Widowmaker - the first 930 made in '77.

They just sold their home and I never had a chance to ask where they were going. They only lived there about 2-3 years.

SUPER nice guy though.....

I am as well, but like some of the others I am seriously considering a slight thinning of the herd. I keep 4 at home, and have the others in a dedicated indoor car barn, but that's 1:45 away from me and just not tenable anymore. I believe the 914 would be the first sold, the second would be a much more difficult choice.

Off course I'm still partial to Porsche,

have my modern day 904, dead reliable, goes like a raped ape, always fun, drive it every other day.
Whenever its parked somewhere, and I see it when I walk back, it looks great, from all angles.
it is special compared to every day normal cars , it makes me feel happy..

I hear ya - but aren't 914's going up in value - and where will they be say 10 years from now?

Aside from the fun of driving your Porsche - seems like there's an incentive to hang onto them as an investment too, eh?

If I was Kevin Todd I'd get rid of the 928.

That '88 is pretty much my pinnacle for Porsche. I am unwilling to spend the $$ for one today, I have the money, but no way in my lifetime these days. I will admire from a distance.

Back to OP, definitely not partial to Porsche anymore. I owned a beautiful '86 Carrera black over tan interior, it was my dream car since a kid. Sold it 3 years later and bought a Ford F-150. Sold that after a few years as well. More recently rocked a black '03 996, loved that car too until I didn't. Now drive a '04 Jeep Wrangler and ride a '17 KTM 1290 Super Duke GT. Life is always evolving for me. Zero brand loyalty in this house.

But man o man, that '88 930 looks sweet!

That's the reason they're all still here. It's already worth more than I paid--even with the work I've done since the purchase, and it's a sub-100k mile car.

I hear you--but if you saw it and drove it; you'd probably change your mind. It's a Euro S that was originally in Switzerland, and has been very well restored, including a very well done glass-out respray (in PTS Prussian Blue) and complete engine rebuild. The only mod is the header/exhaust system, which makes the thing sound simply glorious.

It does its intended job very, very well, so I'm hesitant to let her go.

Plus, I mean, it's a SHARK!:D

Cairo94507 10-28-2022 05:46 AM

Love Porsches; but for me they need to be air-cooled. Had the 997.2 C4S 6-speed coupe for about 7 years and it just did nothing for my soul. I love my 914-6 and can't see selling it. I would love a '98 993 C2S coupe though.

Three fifty sixes do feel far more solid than a VW or especially a Speedster repro. The Volkswagen body is bolted to the floor pan with a flexible seal in between. Then the fenders are bolted to the body. The 356 body, fenders, floor, roof and all is one welded unit from nose to tail.
