Amazing piece of automotive art and history . Can't imagine what that cost to produce .

Race Car Replicas sells a kit for around $60,000 minus drivetrain.

If I suddenly had lots of spare cash and wanted a cool replica, it would be a 904 with a 6 cylinder 911 engine.
The problem is getting in or out of either the 904 or the above Jaguar, and actually driving them. That Jag will be something to be driven in cold weather only. ![]() Both are great for museums, not really great to drive.

I'm surprised replicas of these aren't more popular.

As far as the original I recall a one car had been built and then the fire at the factory occurred and it was lost. |

When entering and exiting, it looks like a 12-16" slot (with hard edges) though which to pass your head. Other than that small problem, it's pretty awesome.

I wonder what it cost him to have this car built? He keeps saying "us" but I wonder if he and his wife made decisions and not actually contributed to building it.

Has anyone here built a kit car? How hard would building one of these replicas with a Jag V12 be?

I have built several "kit" cars. On the Easy to Hard scale, I would list the "Dune Buggy" on the easy side, the Cobra on the easy to medium side and the GT40 on the hard side. I would expect the XJ13 to be on the harder side especially with a 12-cylinder Jag powerplant. Having visited the RCR factory in Fraiser, MI to look at their offerings they will sell you a full kit up to a complete car minus drivetrain. It just a matter of how fat your wallet is.
I sat in one of their Porsche 917 replicas and was surprised how much smaller the cockpit was than a GT40. Last edited by gary1101; 01-26-2024 at 08:52 AM.. |

They did not have any XJ13 kits when I visited. I saw several GT40's, a couple Porsche 917's, some Superlites and a Jaguar D Type. The fiberglass shells on all the cars looked quite good. The aluminum monocoque chassis they manufacture were very well done. They did many of the movie cars for the Fast Five francise.

Did y'all take note of the model of the wooden buck? Nice, wonder what it cost to build that?

That's the story I recall from reading a Road &Track article from probably 35 years ago. The sole prototype was crashed during testing. I didn't know it had been rebuilt.

The XJ 13 prototype was built to explore the idea of returning to LeMans. The project was shelved in the '60s and the car was stored. When Jaguar was introducing their V12 in the E type, they trotted out the old prototype and had their test driver do some hot laps at MIRA . Depending on who you read, either a Tyre failed or the magnesium wheels had aged to the point where one of them failed and the car was totaled. (The driver, Mr. Lewis was bruised but otherwise unhurt and was at work the next day). The wreck went back into storage and was rebuilt years later.
Although it was fast, I think it would have suffered the same problem as the early 917s and GT 40s in that the quest for a slippery shape led to instability at high speed. Driving that car down the Mulsanne straight in the old days would give you goosebumps for more than one reason. Best Les
