The Exorcist still scares the crap out of me

I first watched it when I was 12. My parents took me and my older brother to the movies to see it. I remember wetting my bed that night because I was too scared to go to the bathroom. I imagined I’d see an image of myself possessed by the devil in the bathroom mirror.

Fast forward 46 years later and that movie still scares the crap out of me. Slasher movies frighten me too but occult movies give me nightmares. I better wear Depends tonight! |

I think The Exorcist is a horror masterpiece. So many good ingredients went into it- the roots in Catholicism, the novel by William Peter Blatty, the direction by William Friedkin, the principal actors (especially Max von Sydow), and notably the voice of Mercedes McCambridge as the demon. I was 16 when it came out and it left an impression on me more than just about any movie ever did.

Most "scary" movies aren't really scary. I enjoy several of the Halloween and Friday the 13th movies, but they were never scary.

The Exorcist is scary. I think I was 12 or 13 the first time that I saw it. It is an excellent movie, extremely well done. I can't put my finger on any one thing that made it great, but it is. I feel like it holds up well even today. I'm not sure if I've even seen the Omen. I think I've seen Damian: Omen II. I don't much remember it. I should check them out again.

In high school, we thought it would be fun to watch it in our buddy’s pitch black basement. I think three of us actually finished it.

We went to see The Exorcist at the matinee so we wouldn’t have to leave the theater at night. I still get the heebie-jeebies when I occasionally listen to Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells.

Because we were idiots once and young, the end of the nights of partying all of the summer of 1974 were closed out with late night listens to both sides at full volume on my brother’s quadriphonic stereo. Last edited by Crowbob; 10-29-2022 at 09:47 AM.. Reason: Literary touch-up. |

now, movies where the horror is insanity ... now thats something i like. shutter island, memento, inception ... far far far more scary. because the human mind is far scarier than any made up demon. or cult movies, like midsommer ... very scary. the things actual humans do to each other is far more horrifying than demons. If anyone has seen the movie lately, the special effect during the swivel head scene is really, really hokey compared to contemporary film-making. |

The Ring scene where she came out of the TV all skewed. Yeah, that was freaky, lol. I was in my 30's and still smoking cigarettes at that time. I remember going outside after watching the movie to light up. I was standing on the steps of the patio under the eve as it was dark and rainy. I couldn't help but think that chick was about to pop her head over the roof and take me out, lol.

Alien was way creepier and scarier than the Exorcist to me. Way more plausible. Maybe if I had been raised as a Catholic, the Exorcist would be scarier for me. The Methodist church I was brought to did not get into the devil much.
