Suggestions for shipping a pallet
I have an oversized pallet that I need to ship from Phoenix to Syracuse NY.
Its oversized because strapped to the pallet is a "potty service cart" for an airplane and a even longer "aircraft tow bar." They are lying flat (please see photo) and over the end by a few inches. Approx size of the longest box is 67" long, less than 2.5 feet wide and about 25" tall. Weight is less than 100 pounds but somewhat bulky. Using loads of straps to secure the two boxes. Anyone have any suggestions on who to use for something like this? Wanted to ask for ideas before simply blind calling folks in the phone book. BTW before someone asks, yes I am finally downsizing (retired in January) and cleaning up the hangar! ![]() Thanks, Joe A ![]()

Try Fastenall or Old Dominion (LTL).

I wonder if you might be better off shipping the items separately?

I have been using this company for years when I have big stuff on pallets to ship. Best prices I can find, where I don't even try to call anyone else.

You need a bigger pallet that the boxes don't hang over.
Or, maybe you can place them on the pallet diagonally with the smaller, longer box on top. Strive to keep the boxes inside the footprint of the pallet and get them snugged down so they do not move and they won't move. Use that h/d cello wrap to bundle them together, then ratchet strap the bundle down to the pallet. Make sure the blades of the forklift can slide under the pallet easily and not grab the straps.

We use Worldwide Express. They represent multiple shipping companies. While 42x48 is a standard pallet, pallets of all sizes are shipped every day. No issue. They can pickup from you and can arrange a "Liftgate" truck if you don't have a forklift.
https://wwex.com/ or 800-758-7447 (SHIP) You need an LTL (less than a truckload) shipment. You could also consider Forward Air. They are "Terminal to Terminal" only.

I've used these guys before (several times) with no complaints.
Averitt https://www.averittexpress.com/ XPO https://www.xpo.com/ Southwest Motor Transport https://www.smtl.com/ (will need to be expedited through their partner network) The one thing I will advise, if you don't have a dock or fork lift, tell them to send a rig with a lift gate and pray they do. Doh! Red beat me!

YRC frieght.
Stay away from ups frieght now transforce. Sobs are trying to hit me for 900 dollars after i paid for the pallet i shipped. I would stand them up on end and/or get a better pallet. Or just just make/ extent to a longer pallet. Last edited by Arizona_928; 07-19-2022 at 07:56 PM.. |

Joe, be careful of online shipping services. When I had a crate of windshields shipped from OH to me the freightquote.com quote was reasonable. The final invoice Old Dominion added 150 lb to the weight of the crate which doubled the price. It took a lot of work to undo it.
For two boxes as long as they will survice UPS/FedEx. I would use shippo.com. Shockingly inexpensive as a UPS aggregator.

When we get large monitors shipped to us they come on long narrow pallets. You need one of those. Anything sticking over the edge of a pallet will be smashed flat to the end of the pallet by people who just don't care.

Shaun, Thanks and totally agree. Might be able to ship that way without the pallet. Masraum, Agree, even being moved around they would still be 3-4 inches over the edge on the pallet. Thanks to everyone else. We tried to put these two boxes standing up on a normal sized pallet but they simply were not stable, so thought about lying them down on an oversized pallet.

I think I'd shrink wrap the two together and send UPS or FedEx without a pallet.

But I'm in the camp of shipping those separately, as was mentioned. BTW, when I had some stuff I needed here from Maryland...we were able to get them on a truck hauling racing kayaks to Florida. Just a quick stop off I-95 and they were back on their way. Three big boxes and 2 rolls of shade cloth. Wouldn't fit on a regular pallet either. Makes it a challenge. No paperwork or anything....lol.....just flipped them some cash.......

Ship it in two pieces.
I bought a 991.1 dash from Florida. They shipped it on an oversized pallet. The carrier still managed to smash one end. I sold the old one to Texas. Shipped it in a custom made heavy box (UPS at the time) made it from two long boxes loaded with styrofoam and bubble wrap. Arrived excellent shape.
