What makes you nervous driving on the road?

What makes you nervous driving on the road?

We live not too far from Nucor steel and I see their trucks daily hauling all types of steel. Over the years I’ve seen big loads come loose from the trucks and done quite a bit of damage.

What really makes me nervous, is the coils of 4 foot wide metal. I’ve seen these on the side of the road and in the back of the tractor cab, were they came loose and rolled forward.

My fear, is one of these is going to come loose and land on my truck!

What’s your fear?

Concrete trucks with the rotating drums. I photographed a scene where a concrete truck was at a stop, and the pin broke and the drum full of concrete rolled off the truck and onto a car at the red light. The driver was crushed into a red goo. One of the worst accident scenes I ever saw and I saw a lot of them. We had one ambulance chasing attorney that would hire us to photograph accident scenes and the cars at the salvage yard. I hated that part of my job.

Windy days (we have a few of them here in Oklahoma) and 18 wheel semis are terrifying. Seeing them blown around and often blown over is also scary as hell.

Jokes aside. I'm worried about sheep running onto the road.

Here in NZ we have a lot of sheep. I like going out into the country and really winding the 911 up in top gear. Some sheep may have got out of a paddock and are in the long grass etc, then run onto the road when they get the fright of a 911 with SSI's at 6,000 rpm.

Hasn't happened to me but has happened to others.

Oh, and logging trucks. Especially logging trucks.

Idiots. They scare me, and there seems to be plenty of them these days. 60 mph is 80 feet per second. Drivers don't seem to "get" that part. Safe driving laws, rules and best practices....largely ignored. It's a free-for-all out there.

Black ice. I survived it once I don't wish to repeat the nightmare.

Here in north Texas I just assume everyone on the road is drunk. In Colorado, where I lived for 45 or so years, I assumed everyone was high. I’m now a very defensive driver and rarely drive after dark.

I don't like going over long bridges anymore .... after doing it my whole life with no issues . It's crept up on me in recent years, and after talking with others, evidently I'm not alone...

That and other drivers for sure ...

Drivers heading towards me in the wrong lane on the freeway/Interstate
This has happened to me three times so far.
I was fortunate to spot the oncoming vehicle in time.

Also flying debris from a blown semi tire.

Distracted drivers. You see them going 10-15 mph under the limit and there is no telling what they will do next. Turn, brake, change lanes, etc.

I was an air traffic controller for 30 years working mostly commercial aircraft.
But it was the smaller general aviation aircraft that were the ones you had to watch closely.
Knowing these general aviation pilots were landing and then getting into their cars at the airport concerned me.

Old ladies at the supermarket. Full speed backwards out of a park without having had a look first.

Back in 1984 I did a couple bicycle races in New Zealand and at the pre-race meeting the director warned us to be very cautious if we saw someone running their sheep across the road to another pasture as the stuff the sheep dropped in the road was the most slippery thing known to mankind! Fortunately, I never hit anything!

Here in San Diego the men/women that drive with their arms out front and stiff mean they did NOT learn to drive here, if you know what I mean!

Having my wife in the passenger seat.
She is a nervous passenger and freaks about everything.
If the car in front of us brakes, she grabs the door and dash.
It's hard not to get caught up in her paranoia.

Years ago driving uphill on a brisk late fall day in my 1970 Volvo 145S (loved that car!) - engine started to race and I thought the clutch was finally finished...car is stopped near the top of the hill and I get out and immediately slip and sense the real issue...black ice...and my feet go under the car as I grab the running board and the car starts to slide and spin down the hill - me grabbing the running board for dear life and my legs under the car...which finally slides off the road and comes to a halt...me with two intact legs and attached feet and thinking all is well. Start the car up, still pointing up hill, and spin the rear wheels to bring her around pointing downhill and I'm on my way. Entire incident takes maybe thirty seconds but feels like forever.

So yeah...black ice - that and driving 80mph bumper to bumper amidst all the late night drunks on I-95 during the winter holidays - have been celebrating with my city relatives...and cannot get back to Vermont soon enough! Yeah we have our drunks...but at least its not bumper to bumper!

Funny, last night I got to thinking about the time I drove from KC Mo to Bryan TX in one day. There was a section of the road that was two-way traffic, not divided highway. It was just outside of Dallas. I got to Bryan and everyone was so glad I'd made it in one piece. Turns out I'd driven thru a tornado warning area for most of that two-way part. I remember it was raining cats 'n dogs and every time a semi went by going the other direction I'd loose sight of the road for a good 5 seconds or so as the wipers couldn't clear the amount of water on the windshield. This was back when I was traveling solo in my '68 1600 BMW back in the late '70's.
