Professional Designations
Hello,
I am in the commercial insurance industry. People in my line of work often have a string of professional designations behind their name. CPCU, CIC, ARM, and some others that I mostly forget. Well, I got an MBA years ago, so I put that on my email signature. Then I got a "CIC" designation, so it went on as well. And then, my assistant got me a T-shirt that she custom made. It says "Insurance Ninja." We have a lot of fun between the two of us and it was something of a very small inside joke. But, I added "IN" to my alphabet soup that follows my name for the last two years now. And you know what? NOT ONE PERSON has asked what IN is. If you can't tell, I think this is pretty stupid self-promotion. The fact that I added some letters and not one person has inquired pretty much confirms this. I thought the fine folks in OT might find this amusing. Happy Thanksgiving Y'all! |

Commercial P&C Insurance, designations carry a lot of weight. I always notice if people have a Risk Management degree, from what school, and CPCU - even in a sales role.
Congratulations on achieving the IN! Well done... ![]()

Something I have never understood.
If an MD lets his license to practice expire, they are not supposed to use the MD on the end anymore. The MD is the degree you got when you graduated. Just because you no longer practice, it does not mean you never graduated medical school. Can't understand the logic at all.

My sister is an VP of HR. She, at one time, had a manager outside of HR, say he discriminated against people who didn't put those behind their name. She needed to explain those HR designations have very little to do with their past or present performance. The manager just thought the more letters, the more qualified (even if he had no idea what any of them meant).

If you have an MBA, use “Master” before your name, and not “MBA” afterwards. HA!
Or I could use “BS MBA” after my name. Double Haha! |

Where I worked, many had multiple degrees (like MBAs), many certifications, etc. We made fun of those that put them on correspondence (as posers). Sorta like those Latin American dictators with the gigantic rack of medals on their uniforms (but had never fought in a war). Pretty much everyone had the education, training, and necessary certifications to allow them to do the work or they would have never made it past HR. They were listed in the resume and if hired, they provided proof of earning them. It was what personnel actually said and did in correspondence that gave them cred.
