Early winter weather

Another 6 inches or more of snow predicted for before Saturday.
It was less than a week ago that we had 75 and sunny...now it's 24 degrees.

The snow may be a pain but it sure does make for a quiet neighborhood. At least for a while.

This Sheiße is for the birds. It's 40º here this morning. At least our next two afternoons will be mostly sunny and nearly 60º. The predicted high for Sat is 45º.

I do miss (in some ways) snowy winters. But when I lived in Japan, I feel like we had better gradual progressions through the seasons. Summer would end, and then you'd have a long cool fall, then winter would set in, etc....

I feel like here lately we get summer, then a little fall, and then crazy cold fronts hit and bring winter in a few hours. WHen you're used to warm temps, going to cold temps suddenly is a real beyotch.

I honestly don't mind the snow or cold that much...lived in this area for most of my life.

What I don't like is waking up in the morning and seeing a county truck with a spinner on the back spreading every inch of the road with salt.

I swear salt must be as cheap as water in Michigan.

I saw a forecast for Buffalo NY for this weekend that was measuring the expected snowfall in feet instead of inches. LOL! Time to move.

Strap some tiny blades to 'em and have them out "plowing" your driveway and they'll learn!

Two years ago, in Golden CO, we set a local record with a 75 degree swing ... in less than 24 hours.

Although it's been a bit chilly the last few days, it's nice to be retired on a lake in North Carolina.

I won't miss northern or mountain winters for even a moment.

On November 11th 1911 Oklahoma had the "great blue norther"

https://www.weather.gov/oun/events-19111111

Imagine a time with no computers, or TV and not even radio broadcast. Commercial radio had not been invented yet. Going about your business in Oklahoma City and the temperature reached a record high for the date of 83, before plunging 66 degrees to a record low of 17! Both daily temperature records remain unbroken and untied since 1911.

You know lots of people were out and about in summer attire, and suddenly very cold.

Thank to the Army I was privileged to live in a bunch of places: Germany, UK, Watertown NY, El Paso, Hawaii, Savannah GA, to mention a few with varied weather.

Got sent to El Paso after Hawaii. Thought I'd hate it. Did not, actually loved it as much as Watertown.

I loved them all. What I didn't love was Fort Campbell KY and Dayton Ohio.

Watertown NY is on banks of Lake Ontario and about 20 miles from Canada border on I-81. Lots and lots of snow every year. You just get used to it. I much prefer blowing snow over mowing grass. As long as you have electric plug in start and heated handles on your snow blower you are golden. Sure winter may appear to be a mofo from the outside, but if you embrace it for what it is, it becomes pretty enjoyable. You can usually park anywhere you want when going to stores because the lines of the parking lot are obscured. You can do handbrake turns at will.

I'll add: today's tech on clothes makes living in cold climates much more tolerable. I was stationed in Europe back when wool and white cotton waffle long johns were the tech. That sucked and I froze.

In the colder months here...If I need to go to HD, grocery store...or whatever. I leave the car running with the keys in it unlocked. Nice to get in a toasty warm car.

One of my friends had moved from Rochester, NY to Oklahoma City for a job. He did not get a chance to sell his giant snow blower. Rochester gets a lot of lake effect snow, and he had a snow blower that was designed for it.

He discovered that he really loved playing golf in December or January in 45 to 50 degree weather. When we would get an occasional snow, he loved getting out his mega snow blower, and playing with it. He would plow his driveway and sidewalks, and then to the neighbors just for fun.

2 1/2 inches of snow Saturday. I cannot remember getting more that a light coating before December.

When I lived in Japan, that was how we rolled, white cotton waffle long johns.
I had (still have) a pair of the military gloves, gray wool w/black leather overs. I've also got my dad's old watch cap. I haven't yet needed either.

I was a kid when we lived in Japan, and I think kids love cold, snowy winter weather. I know I did.

When we lived in Japan, my dad got something very similar to the jacket below from a guy that flew in P3 Orions. It's got the zip out liner, and I want to say I've seen something that said that it was certified for arctic use. I believe it. Even without the liner, I've never been able to wear it without sweating.

^^^

A friend of mine in HS had an army surplus fur coat very similar to this one.
He always said it was the warmest coat he ever owned. One winter night, by a campfire, the thing caught fire while he was wearing it.
He wasn't burnt badly, but the coat went up in flames in a matter of seconds.

We have early winter here in Idaho this year. A very warm Halloween followed by plunging temps with lows in the 20s. This week we see lows in the teens and highs in the 30s which is January weather. Had a dusting of snow last week but the sun melted it off quickly. Winter tires- mounted!
