If you're heading up [North] 101 and get hungry in Atascadero, the A-Town diner is pretty good. I've eaten there a number of times when working up at my brother's place.

Q: would you like a Coke?

A: yes

Q: what kind?

No joke.

On similar lines: barbecue is a food, not the thing in the back yard that you cook on, nor is it an event, as in "we are having a BBQ"

Oh yeah and the following:

the thing you push around at the grocery store and put your groceries in is called a BUGGY

Go love your mama's neck = give your grandmother a hug

So endeth the Southern lesson (unless I think of something else)

It's been years but ....
Gotta be an open sandwich with chicken or beef and mashed potatoes with gravy on both. Side of peas.

I like them crunchy and brown....which are impossible to get in steak fries.

And also, ketchup doesn't work...must be mayo.
When I get takeout fries they go straight into the toaster oven when I get home.

The majority of my diner experience was in my younger days at about 4:30 am after the bars closed in the city....

We have a good one a few miles up Sierra Hwy between Santa Clarita and Acton. Maybe you recognize it from film and commercials (Cindy Crawford's Pepsi commercial for one)....
The Halfway House Cafe

Another good breakfast place is Over Easy in Phoenix. It's been featured on DDD..

Fries (chips in the Anglo) are all sorts of good, but are mostly a tomato ketchup delivery device. O_o

We go to a local diner here every Sunday for breakfast. The place has a 50"s diner style with juke box and pictures of Elvis. Solid breakfast. Last night we went there for dinner. I had a cheeseburger nothing fancy but it was good.
There was a diner in Buffalo we tried that Guy Fieri (DDD) was at. The Lake Effect Diner. They had old school food with the best milkshakes. Peanut butter and chocolate was my favorite. Sadly it closed due to not enough staff after covid.
We're heading to Florida for the holiday's. Looking forward to Waffle House.

Best breakfast potatoes (don’t care what you call) I ever had were at Marigold Kitchen in Madison Wisconsin.

More upscale than a typical diner but these were phenomenal.

Favorite diner is the Jones Diner in NYC at the corner of Lafayette and Great Jones. Unfortunately closed in 2002 and demolished

Favorite diner food…egg and cheese on a roll side of bacon. Fried shrimp basket. Chicken souvlaki pita. French toast. Chocolate chip pancakes. Coffee.

Sitting in a diner drinking coffee, chain smoking with a friend. Life was simple.

Diner grits come swimmin' in butter, and then you cover 'em with black pepper and and equal amount of salt. And I'm not a big salter, but it belongs on grits and watermelon ... Or you "ain't from around here"!

I may be back wif more rulez later, but that's a start ....
No argument on the hashbrowns.

Shrimp and grits does not have cheese on it. Nope, never.

Good grits does have cheese in it, not sure if cheddar is the optimum cheese, but it also needs jalapeños. Jalapeño cheese grits. Never had them at a diner but a restaurant in Tulsa used to make a world class example of them.

I wouldn’t go to a diner for breakfast, I’d hesitate to go to ANY restaurant for breakfast, but lunch is fair game.

I always liked the funky ice that they used to fill the tiny water glasses that diners used, back in the day.

Sadly, I can report that their huevos rancheros didn't make the grade. I guess I should have had the elk, or I should say something elk...

...
You've forgotten more about cooking than I know ..... but I know how to eat grits as they are served to me ....

When I've had "Shrimp & Grits" (only a few times), they were delicious and had cheese in 'em.... but not on top.

I've only seen regular cheezy grits at a local cafateria (now closed) that had them plain (served with butter) and also with cheese mixed in.

Tradititional grits, and all those served at diners/breakfast joints here will not have cheese ... just butter .... and I think that's 100% of the time ... and a lifetime of grits.

Folks "South of the Border" put mustard in their pork BBQ sauce .... Ya just can't trust 'em on some things.....but I eat 'em for sure ... the grits that is . Mustard sauce.... Hard pass!

But "Low Country" shrimp & grits are awesome

Speakin' of barbeque, it is served plain without sauce, but you may want to add some to it to your liking. Vinegar based for me! Heading down to VA today, so may pick up 10 lbs this weekend from Wilson's in South Hill since I have a taste for some!
