Do you still watch DVDs?
 

I hadn’t watched any in a while but I’ve recently re-watched a few old James Bond movies, plus a copy of Seabiscuit that I never watched when it came out…. I have probably 50 DVDs, or more, than I’ve never gotten around to watching, mostly documentaries of places I’ve visited over the years.

The reason I ask is that I recently put 15 or 20 Porsche and auto racing DVDs up for sale and have been thoroughly underwhelmed by the response. I think I’ve sold two, and that took about two weeks. I would imagine most of this content can’t be streamed anywhere and I would think it would still be popular.

Does nobody have DVD players anymore?

Are people so spoiled by streaming services that that’s all they use?

I’m probably a bit old school, I still have one analog TV, I listen to CDs and (gasp!) FM radio and I haven’t watched any network TV or streamed anything in over a year, when I decided to boot my Wi-Fi/Internet provider out of my pocket.

I still have a Sony blu-ray dvd player. Until last week, I hadn't used it for prob 4 years.
I also have 6 shelves of dvd discs...each shelf holds about 25 discs. They will go to the landfill soon.

Streaming is so much easier than dvd's.

I tried and was faced with Ads I could not FFWD thru, yeah streaming is better

We have bought a few DVDs over the years. My first DVD was Blazing Saddles. The second one was 2001, and Outlaw Josey Wales.

It has been while since I watched one. The DVD player I had in my office died. Now I would have to watch it on my computer.

DVDs are most useful for traveling. Long airport layovers go faster with something to watch.

I have a collection of favs that includes films like 12 Angry Men, Moby Dick, Serenity and oh so many others.

We have Netflix and Acorn online for TV. I buy DVD or BD, and then rip them and put them on my home NAS and stream from the NAS to my Apple TV.

It's probably been nearly 20 years since I listened to the radio by choice. For several years, I had an iPod with a way to get the output into my car stereo. But for probably the past 15 years, I've been using Pandora. I don't get to listen to some of the stuff that I had (all of my old CDs are ripped on my home NAS drive), but I get to listen to lots of new stuff without having to buy and rip new CDs.

What? Landfill for DVDs? We've sold them at garage/yard sales which is probably not a thing where you are, but then we also have a used book store chain (Half Price Books) that will buy them from you. You don't get much, but whatever. Don't dump 'em in a landfill unless they are broken, scratched, chewed on by the dog, etc...

Yeah, but, a lot of the stuff that I have on DVD simply isn’t available to be streamed.

My experience with streaming is that it’s a royal pain in the ass. Each streaming service seems to have a half a dozen things worth watching plus hundreds of things that are just garbage. I’ve subscribed to a half a dozen, only to cancel my subscription a month down the road we hen I’d exhausted everything on their platform that I wanted to watch.

There’s so many different streaming services now that I can’t even begin to keep track of who has what...

You bet! I have some music DVD's like Concert For Bangladesh, Live at Pompeii, The Kids are Alright, just to name a few that I really like; seeing bands I grew up with in their prime and hearing the songs on a good system. Very satisfying!

I don't have many scripted movies, a Kubrick collection (I probably watch one a year,) and of course Lonesome Dove. (And Showgirls! It's not nearly the dud that people say it is!)

New TV's only have HDMI inputs. I had to buy a bunch of stuff so my wife could watch Buffy.

^^^Don't all BD and DVD players have HDMI outputs?
Mine does and it's prob 8 years old.

Still do,have a great home theatre sound system. Streaming is great but I have found
the soundtrack in particular on DVD's, to have more impact sound quality wise.

I had to buy new HDMI cables to make my AV amp keep working. It was just fine and the "new standard" his and all of sudden all I got was a message that my system was prohibited. I looked around online and discovered only buying the new HDMI cables would get my AV system to work again.

I was not pleased, but the new cables fixed it all. It is all due to the anti piracy standards and digital media rights.

I still watch, and even occasionally still buy, DVDs.
There’s certain movies that I can watch multiple times. A lot of the classics, and some others (some decidedly non classics) that have resonated with me. I like to have them on the literal shelf. Plus often they have bonus features on them.
Usually can find them for $10 or so on Amazon or eBay, if I watch the DVD twice I’m ahead.

I’m more old school than most, but while I still use DVDs, I don’t listen to CDs or FM radio anymore. Streaming music is a must for me, which makes CDs/radio obsolete.
(That being said, almost all of the music on my 1000+ “favorites” playlist was made before 1990).

Of the 150 or so dvd's that I have...I'll prob never watch more than 5 of them again.

It depends on what you’re interested in.
I watch very little sports, no network TV, no TV news, but watch a lot of movies. Streaming is good for that (and of course also for sports or whatever else one is interested in).
But anyways, if you have Internet there’s really no reason not to stream. There’s many, many completely free streaming channels that have all sorts of movies etc (Pluto, etc). Any smart TV can get them, or it can be done with a $25 streaming stick. No other costs, subscriptions etc.

Also if you have Amazon Prime, Prime Video is included in the cost. They have a ton of great movies and content.

I installed Pioneer double din stereos in both my work truck and Volvo and they have the option of playing DVD's!

I also have DVD's that contain music video collections like Tom Petty and Queen.

Also, when we get a power outage here from a hurricane for example, I can run my home TV and DVD player off my generator and have entertainment, as needed.
