Interesting facts about EV use.

I won't try to repeat everything....but some surprising facts.

That's partly because I am skewing the data by daily-driving a 25 year-old Land Cruiser that gets 15 mpg on a good day. SmileWavy

For all the news that you hear about EV's....it's amazing (to me) how miniscule their numbers are.

daepp 11-30-2022 10:33 AM

And no one ever seems to take into account the carbon required to manufacture an EV for (mostly Californian) buyers who usually could have just kept driving their perfectly good ICE vehicle...

Every other car is an EV here

stevej37 11-30-2022 10:45 AM

^^^
Here...I think it's less than 1% in MI
(I'm prob way too high on that)

stevej37 11-30-2022 10:48 AM

I just googled it....I was way too high.

Michigan by the numbers

- Percentage of registered vehicles that are electric: 0.13%

Not no one. Lots of people are looking into this. Here's one report:

Just found this site. I can't vouch for it, but they report EV registrations by state.

I'm just going to say my 22 year old hybrid (Honda Insight) has 285k miles, and the original battery still works. Secret is grid charging w a trickle charger to keep everything perfectly balanced. Is the capacity the same as new? No, obv. But people who generally attack EVs are full of **** and complain that batteries won't last, but that is not proving to be the case. There are some Teslas with CRAZY high miles with like 85%+ capacity on the original battery.

My daughter has a 2010 Prius with 95,000 miles. Admittedly it's low miles for its age, but the battery pack is still A-OK.

Displaced only 2 days worth of gas use....

Was it worth it for all the open pit mining for lanthanides and other rare earth metals?

How about the recycling of the batteries by third world countries....?

Should have just invested in diesel efficiency.

Batteries are rated on cycles....

The train is on the tracks.

It is about the ducats.

wdfifteen 11-30-2022 11:31 AM

This again?
Sigh...

You missed the point. Try reading the article again.

The point that batteries suck as a 19th century tech and yet still are used... the pipedream the it's better than hydrocarbons.... what about the real costs of EV....
Let alone the elephant in the room... EV are only as green as the electricity that they use....

Reread what i wrote and lmk if you have questions....

Again, my 22 year old hybrid with 300k miles says you don't know what you're talking about. Got 64mpg on my last trip into the city to buy a set of wheels. Car has paid for itself several times over.

Not that I expect someone of your mindset to ever acknowledge not being an expert in all things. I would put good money that you're also a constitutional historian*, geopolitical scholar*, microbiologist*, or scientist*, depending on the week, amirite?

*: with absolutely zero formal education or real world experience in any of these fields

Ah..Were you ever curious what the metal of the "nickel metal hydride" battery that your hybrid uses? lanthanum....

Wanna see a lanthanum strip mine?... And this is a US based one.

As for the 64 mpg... that's cool. My ALH diesel achieves mid 40's without a battery pack and on a mechanical injection pump. My mk6 TDI got high 40's with the MPG robbing tune. Could you imagine a diesel hybrid?... yeah that would be really really cool.

Now since I'm done tearing down your straw man argument about your hybrid that you threw out. Let's discuss what I mentioned... About EV!

As for expert in things. I'm not much, nor am I that smart. Only 1 publication atm.
Formal education has taught me a few things and tricks. My greatest strengths are orgo/solid state synthesis and sniffing out leftists BS.
