7 December, 1941

For any issues America may currently have, we Aussies still thank you for your navy and marines in saving Australia from invasion.

And your airforce, army and navy in liberating Europe.

We remember your servicemen, and the sacrifices made by them and your country.

“Being saturated and satiated with emotion and sensation, I went to bed and slept the sleep of the saved and thankful.” Churchill 7 Dec 1941

Thank you, aap1966. And us Yanks thank the Australians and Kiwis, along with all other allies for their sacrifice and duty through the many years of service to the world.

Thank you to our US servicemen, Aussie and Kiwi friends, allies and many more, for helping us save the world from a madman.

I couldn’t tell you FDR‘s entire speech, but the first ten words are etched in my mind. It was such an important date and moving speech.

I want to thank all who responded with strength and resolve in resisting the evil which rose to darken our world. A time that I pray we never see again.

It was not just Pearl Harbor that was attacked at the time. Japan attacked the U.S. territories of Guam and the Philippines, and the British territories of Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaya (part of present-day Malaysia). It also invaded the independent nation of Thailand. Pearl Harbor was the big one for us of course, as it was a direct act of war against the USA. They awoke a sleeping giant that had the big stick of massive industrial capacity to make war machines never seen before or since.

I started watching a documentary on Pearl Harbor yesterday hosted by Tom Selleck that was broadcast on PBS. Let's just say the lump in my throat wouldn't go away.

Germany declared war against the U.S.A. that day also

Mistake 1 of 3 that lost the war for them.
2 was allowing Dunkirk to evacuate.
3 was the eastern front war

That's how close history came to being different

Great Britain was also attacked....and within' the hour, Churchill asked for, and received, a declaration of war against Japan.

Form the film Fury

At 2:50 is a pretty eye opening interchange about combat between the FNG and a long time combat vet

"wait until you see it"
"See what?"

Has been some dispute over whether or not the quote is accurate...but Japan did indeed awaken a sleeping giant. The production might of the USA turned to making the tools of war...

Dad was stationed at Ft. Lewis outside of Seattle on Dec 7th, and essentially his outfit (41st division) immediately went out to the Washington Coast in case the Japanese were planning the same thing there.

A few months later dad (18yo) was on the Queen Elizabeths "semi-maiden" voyage as a troop ship from San Francisco to Sydney Australia. When the QE got there the Queen Mary was already in port. The port wasn't large enough for both ships, so the QE had to wait till the QM pulled out. Dad was stationed in the South Pacific for quite some time and had duty in battles in the Phillipines and New Guinea. I only got the "fun/good" stories.

I went with my dad in 1986 on a trip to Australia... we visited some of the places he was stationed and had a few beers in bars that were still there that he had visited in his time there originally.

The Australian people were wonderful, and I truly enjoyed my time there. The only complaint they had about us was that "we" had killed their racehorse (Phar Lap)

The commitment by that generation was amazing. I'm grateful for all those that served, and still continue to do so.

Japanese model of Pearl Harbor, showing ships located as they were during the 7 December 1941 attack. This model was constructed after the attack for use in making a motion picture. The original photograph was brought back to the U.S. from Japan at the end of World War II by Rear Admiral John Shafroth.
