How do I disassemble a submersible pool pump

I want to disassemble a submersible pool pump (the kind used to pump water off pool covers) to check for and repair an electrical short but I am stuck.

I was able to remove the impeller at the bottom, held on by a snap ring, and can get purchase on the shaft but it won't budge. I have unscrewed the handle on the top to allow slack in the cables.

I tried inserting a screwdriver into the gap between the housing and prying away from the pump but it wouldn't budge and I don't want to crack the housing.

I am guessing the motor is well sealed inside the housing given that the pump is submersible,

I'd appreciate any guidance on how to separate the motor assembly from the housing in a non-destructive manner. Unfortunately, I am not the original owner and the label on the pump identifying the manufacturer is illegible. Youtube isn't particularly helpful either.

The pump worked fine last rainy season and was stored away from moisture and vermin. Now, as soon as I plug it in, the breaker on that circuit trips instantly, before the pump even starts; I tried several independent branches and get the same behavior. That indicates an internal short to me. I already inspected the cable and it is free of externally visible defects and has no sharp kinks in it.

TIA

No help on disassembly. However, you might search here for a replacement...for all I know, they may have made the one in your pics. They make a wide variety of submersible pumps...from small pond pumps to commercial high flow stuff.

Here's one of their pool cover pumps:

In my experience there are no user serviceable parts inside. Once water infiltrates past the seal everything is corroded and compromised and it is not repairable. If it were mine, I would spend $50 and pick out a nice new one.

This!

back in the "good ol days" of American manufacturing Little Giant was headquartered just one mile from my house here in Oklahoma City. They had a simple policy, if a customer brings in a broken Little Giant made product, they just swapped it out with a new one. I asked one of the guys if they ever inspected them to see what the failure is. He said they are plastic welded together during manufacture so only cutting them open will open them up. He said they learned the plastic will get micro fractures, and water seeps in and causes corrosion.

I even brought in a string of garden lighting that had been outside in the weather for years. They just handed me a new set.

Now Little Giant is all made in China, and pretty much as cheaply as possible, and we went through a Koi pond pump ever 12 to 14 months. I sadly said screw it, Little Giant is a crappy product now. We replaced the Koi pond pump with a different brand and it has run non stop for three years.

RIP Little Giant. Once you were a giant, now just another garbage Chinesium product,.
