Say it ain't so. Grady Clay's cousin? I think not.

I "Swear the God" as my ex mother in law used to say, I have watched the Ali Foreman Rope a Dope finale more times than I can count.

This video gives a breakdown of the final flying of fists with slow-mo and stop action with articulate narrative. Video should start where the breakdown begins. If not, go to 4:15. Even Afterburn can appreciate this one.

Just the way you worded it made me afraid maybe he was putting himself in situations where this could be a real concern, not just a hypothetical one. I'm glad to hear he is not, and you guys are just talking it over hypothetically. I've done the same with my two sons, with my overriding message being "just don't - it's never worth the risk".

And, yes, we've discussed the "extremes" of that risk. As I've belabored previously, running into "that guy". Beyond that, we have also discussed the "other end" of the risk - "winning". I think most of us saw the video in another thread wherein a really big guy punches some idiot that had knocked his phone out of his hand. Knocked him out, which resulted in the guy falling over backwards and smashing his head on the pavement and going into convulsions. He could just as well have died. That's what "winning" a street fight often looks like. "Winning" could change our lives forever, and not in a good way.

Anyway, I'm heartened to hear that none of this is a concern for you and your son. It isn't for us, either. No more than just a hypothetical exercise.

Exactly. I’m not perfect by any means but I can honestly say that I’ve helped to raise two boys that are good humans. That I can hang my hat on. I think a lot of people on this forum can say the same. [emoji482]

After posting this thread, Youtube sent me another video about Alexander (Fedor's brother). It's interesting. According to the video, the boys had a rough life in USSR. Alexander got in trouble and went to jail, where they believe he got into a notorious gang of thieves/gangsters. He's tried a few times to straighten out and fly right and do the fighting thing, but it seems like he eventually gets drunk and does something stupid that gets him in trouble again. He goes back to jail. He denies the association with the baddies and crime and jail, but it seems like a certainty, and even Fedor has confirmed it despite what his brother says.

In college I worked in the stadium for several concerts and a wrestling match. I suspect your work is a bit more interesting.

These championship-level fighters are very different from those of us who were very good amateurs. The amount of power, speed, and ability to take damage is beyond comprehension. Working these fights and hearing their bones crack against flesh makes me realize they are on a completely different level. When I retire in about a year and a half from my full-time job, my goal is to be a UFC referee. Fun times!

For now, you'll see me in the corner or cage working as an athletic inspector.

I wish these fighters were compensated better for what they do.

That is so awesome, David. Color me envious as can be. Having any kind of an opportunity to get that "up close and personal" with the best of the best pro athletes is such a very rare occurrence. It sounds like you are living your dream. Congratulations!

And, yeah, pro athletes are on a whole different plane than us mere mortals. It's hard to appreciate from the grandstands, or from even just outside of the ring. While I've have never had the opportunity to be in a ring with this level of athlete, I did get a glimpse into this world on the soccer field.

I had the opportunity to play on the practice squad against our Seattle Sounders when I was 16-19 years old. At times it felt as though me and the rest of that squad were just extra orange cones for them to run their drills around. Just a whole different level.

Yup. NFL linemen are 300-lb guys who could spot me three steps, in my prime, and catch me in two seconds. Whole 'nuther level.

Got to train with the wizard himself UFC legend Ryan Hall. Here he is catching BJ Penn in an Imanari roll to backside heel hook. Pretty much retired BJ Penn.

Here's Ryan at our school. I'm wearing the Wakanda rashguard.

Pro fighters are on another level. Here's Max "pain" Griffin literally tearing a guys ear off with an elbow. UFC Vegas 13.

I've rolled with Max several times and the guys an absolute beast.

Very, very cool stuff, Rod! What an amazing opportunity.

I guess the best thing about these guys, beyond their willingness to help us mere mortals, is their ability to "throttle back" a bit. Still, they give us a glimpse... which is plenty for me...

Thanks Jeff! You're correct, and when I rolled with Max, I could tell that any any given moment if he cranked it up he would mash me lol. Its still a privilege to have the opportunity to train with these guys.

Lets not forget the ladies....Aspen Ladd female beast mode.

That begs the obvious question, Rod - now that you have had a chance to grapple with both a top male, and a top female athlete, would she even stand a snowball's chance against him? I think I know the answer...

Our friend Rawknee'sTurbo is much more a fan of your sport than myself (but other than that he seems alright... ;) ) , and he's had a lot to say about the male/tranny presence in female MMA. It just looks so grossly unfair to me. From what I've seen the "guys" just absolutely dominate the "real" girls. I hope that doesn't spell the end for the ladies in the end.

You would be correct again Jeff… The female fighters, as tough as they are, wouldn't stand a chance against their male UFC counterparts, even assuming no size difference.

Ryan Hall is the guy that someone messes with in a bar and lives to regret it. Have you seen the video where he detains the drunk guy at a diner until the cops come?

Rodsrsr 12-27-2022 10:23 AM

I forgot about that one. Typical Ryan.....so calm the entire time.
