this MMA match makes me chuckle every time
I don't watch MMA/UFC. I occasionally see highlights on youtube that are interesting. These two guys, both 6'5" and ~265#, so pretty much monsters. One guy looks like he should be on a recruiting poster for the marines or something. The other guy looks like he was watching the game and his wife started screaming at him to take the trash out. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of either one or in between them when the action starts. Hilarious.

Haha, that's why I like MMA so much. I like the all out brawling of it.

The Russian was not happy he had to wake up from his nap to fight.

The way one looks has little to do with their level of skill or technique. Think "Big Country".
|
Well, that didn’t take long.
Was it stopped early? |

Not bad, an actual fight. But that's only because it ended at the boxing, on their hind legs, like real men. It never had the chance to devolve into the gay porn man love rolling around on the floor hugging each other love fest that most MMA "fights" turn into.
:D |
Higgins sux!!!! :D

Love ya man!!

I do question why there was no standing 8-count or something in this case, the guy was not knocked-out. The ref did him a favor, though...the Russian would have put him to sleep very soon. Generally speaking, if you have a chance to fight a Russian or a bear, choose the bear. That goes double for Ukrainians. :) |
I grew up watching boxing, and never got into MMA, so when I see a MMA fight that takes place off the ground, I think about boxing. My thought is that boxers are a lot better at defending, covering up, slipping, picking off. These guys seemed to be all into hitting and, the Marine guy especially, were leaving themselves pretty open. The Russian hit better and there it went. Kind of boring.

Speeder - head kicks and knees to the head of a grounded opponent are prohibited by modern MMA rules (have been for a long time). Just a friendly FYI. :)

MMA is like a boxing match where if you are losing, you can kick your opponent or tackle them and start wrestling instead. Maybe choke them. In a boxing match, you can't do that. You either have to step up your skills or get beaten.

I don't watch MMA, but this is a MMA match that made me chuckle:

This is like watching "muscle car guys" bicth about "rear engined sports car guys". :D
What, you think a street/bar/neighborhood fight is going to dance around throwing jabs/hooks/straights/uppers? Fights go to the ground...asafp. Fights are brutal. Winning is the only thing and using all weapons at their disposal is necessary. UFC ran toward regulations/rules. I'll take getting choked out vs knocked out every time. Btw, my favorite fighter when I was a kid was Duran. Grew up loving boxing. Remember Kim Duk-koo? Watched that fight live. :( MMA has changed how I view boxing. Or do ya'll prefer this? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1671637266.jpg |
MMA is the most effective form of fighting, which is why its called Mixed Martial Arts. UFC #1 showed us that going to the ground with submissions will beat all other standing disciplines, however that may not be as true today since the element of surprise is now gone and stand up fighters are aware of the dangers of being taken down.
That said, I don't think one could survive without even a basic a ground game in an MMA fight. A successful MMA fighter will be highly skilled in any one of either standup (striking/kicking), takedowns or grappling, and decent in the other two. I agree that boxers back in the heyday were so highly skilled it was more enjoyable to watch vs. MMA where you're basically watching a guy who's decent at all three with tons of physical prowess and athleticism mixed in. Basically a jack of all trades but a master of none, but that's the reality. Mixed Martial Arts is the most effective form of human combat discipline. Fights aren't pretty like Hollywood would have you believe. |
First of all, I've either seen or been in about a million fights. Mostly seen. If there were iPhones back in the '70s and '80s, I could fill a YT channel with actual fights. I went to two huge public high schools with massive parties, a huge, Big10 university with sports teams where I was a bartender at a rowdy bar filled with jocks, went out to bars constantly filled with drunk dudes, worked in the nightclub business in L.A. for years, etc..
A million fights. People who say that, "all fights go to the ground,", have no actual experience in the subject. Some do but most that I've seen do not, unless you count someone dropping to one knee and then getting finished off by their opponent who is still standing. And yes, I've seen dozens of street fights where the victor was throwing hooks/jabs/uppercuts while the loser was swinging at air. That's how every fight went when I was young, other than the ones that were one or two punch knockouts. I've never seen a fight that was won by someone using wrestling moves, though maybe I'm not counting someone getting advantage on the ground and then pounding the other guy with fists. Some fights of course do wind up on the ground but it was the exception back in the day. With the popularity of Jui-jitso now, I'm sure that many street fighters are trying to get the other guy on the ground but that did not happen for the last 200 years up until recently. |
Do you know who wins almost every real fight? The guy who is tougher.

Years ago I saw a clip of a cage fight. Some champion was taking on all customers. A very obese, 6'5" car salesman took the challenge. The salesman had no real fighting experience, just lots of mass. He just took down the champ, laying on top of him and kept hitting him in the head and face. The champ was simply pinned, with all that mass. It was over just about as fast.
