anyone here fast?

trying to lose some weight prior to a hip replacement in february. my body mass index was 37 and 40 being a cutoff point for the surgery i had to get it lowered for a number of reasons other than just numbers. made a few changes life changes that have helped, but I took up fasting 2x a week and it has worked really, really well. got the index down to 33 with more to go.

any of you guys fast, or have practiced it previously? i was not aware of some of the benefits until researching it some. i don't eat much during the day as is, so it has been somewhat natural for me. cutting out the beer may have helped too...

I do 24 hour fasts occasionally.
I sort of fast normally. I usually eat only between noon and 6. Sometimes 2 and 6. So I’m fasting for 18 to 20 hours most days.

I was on the track team in high school...but only for long distance running.

Seriously though...my lunch time is almost always the 'big meal of my day'.
I don't like eating a lot in the evening and then sitting around. I still weigh the same as I did in high school (within 5 lbs.)

So, yes, I kinda fast from lunch until breakfast.
I never eat snacks after 7pm

My wife & I have been intermittent fasting for two or three years now. We eat around mid day & again around 6 to 7. I'm down about ten pounds - 177 to 167. I now prefer that eating schedule. I get hungry around 10 AM, but it gores away. It helps with cutting down on extra snacks and munching. We will occasionally eat a breakfast when we feel like pancakes, but that's once every couple of months or so. My wife tried NOOM and likes that. She went from 106 to 94 following it. She was 86 lbs. when we were married.

I don’t think it was called fasting then and I don’t remember what the name of the program was but it was part of wellness benefits at work.

One of the premises of the program was that you didn’t need to eat first thing. What we perceive as hunger is actually low blood sugar and dehydration. So the program suggested a 1:8 ratio of OJ to water first thing and then continuing throughout the day.

A snack at midday and the a sensible dinner. It was effective although not sustainable, at least not for me.

When I fast, it is for a spiritual purpose. Denying one's own selfishness is empowering. Then again, I have never really used food as entertainment. I have vices, just not that one.

I did it quite a bit for a year or two before Covid hit. I was doing a minimum of 24 hours and a max of 60 hours. Usually it was 36 or 48 hours. It's great, I didn't feel hungry (until the 3rd day, and that was mental, I'm sure). Each day of fasting you should lose about .75# (on average). Some folks will lose more, I think especially if they are active or heavier. I trained to run a 10k while fasting and to ride in an MS150.
Then when I was working from home during covid, I pretty much stopped. It was next to impossible with the wife and grandsons around and eating, and the stress didn't help.
About 2-3 weeks ago, I did an almost 56 hour fast. It was probably the second or maybe third time since Covid hit. I have a vague recollection of a 1 day fast, and may have done another.
I'm hoping to get started again.

When I started, my BMI was ~25.3, and I got down to 23.7.

This guy has a ton of info on fasting. Dr Jason Fung, he's written several books. He's an endocrinologist, I think, and has several clinics that mostly treat obesity and diabetes.

If you follow ^those^ blog entries, you'll eventually get through to page 29
https://blog.thefastingmethod.com/fasting-ghrelin-fasting-29/
He's got a lot of great info in those pages. I suspect it's probably most of one of his books.

I’ve always been thin and I’m sure part of it is my metabolism or genetics or something beyond my control but part of it is probably because I don’t have to eat a lot. In my youth when I ate I’d eat a lot but usually just twice a day. Now that I’m older, I still just usually eat twice a day with a large lunch and a light dinner. So by definition I guess I’m intermittent fasting since I don’t eat for 16-18 hours a day.

That sounds exactly as me.
Metabolism is a very big factor.

I will fast for 24 hours whenever I feel like I need a reset of sorts. I don't see fasting as a healthy way to lose weight.

I eat one main meal at around 5pm with a very small meal sometime before mid day.

3x tea spoons of Metamucil daily helps keep things regular.
- I stay away from carbs when I can but I just love home made potato chips (not often).

It's OK to leave some food on your plate.

^^^Yep... portion control is prob the most important part of a persons weight control.
It's a habit to eat a full plate...most don't need that.

I'm of a completely different mindset.

I eat huge amounts multiple times a day. That way my body never stores fat because it knows there is a great big meal coming it's way shortly.

Never have tried to fast. When I was at 210, on a 6' 2" frame, the wife suggested I might want to cut down on the snacks. Over the next 12 months I dropped 2 1/2 lbs/month by reducing the muffins, cookies and chocolate. Over the next year I experimented a bit and now I am hovering around 175 I'm glad didn't throw out my old belts.
My knees are much happier.

Best of luck with the surgery.

Chicken wings and pork ribs are on the menu for today. I will fast in between.

But seriously, the research is done and the jury is in: If you want to lose weight, then proteins and fats are not your enemy. Sugar and carbs are your enemy. Remove them from your diet. Get up and get out and move around. And find something else to entertain yourself other than food.

juanbenae's situation is a bit different. He is on a short timeline. On a short timeline, I think your goal cannot be much more than just weight maintenance.
