How much to rent the track at Indy?
Run an event, but don't remind anyone of the eclipse. See how many drivers freak out. |

Do you feel like it's worthwhile to view aided? I feel like sometimes when viewing some amazing event, you can get too focused on other things to fully appreciate the event. I figure some glasses are a must. I also have some solar binos (10x50, I think) and a solar filter for my scope (thank you). I figured I'd do glasses and the binos. But if you think the scope is worthwhile, I'll consider that as well.

It depends on what you want. I've watched with appropriate filters and a white light filtered scope. Now I want to try and capture some frames, especially the diamond ring. Indeed proper glasses are a must.

I do think it would be cool to capture a couple of photos. It shouldn't be too tough. I'd probably use my 100-400 and a solar filter. I guess I need to look into getting a solar filter. I assume they will become scarce and more expensive the closer it gets. And I'm sure that good ones aren't cheap now.

Looks like B&H has the following for $110
Hoya 77mm ProND-100000 Neutral Density 5.0 Solar Filter (16.6 Stops) Seems like it should be decent kit.

The forecast for the next couple days is full sunshine...so it will average out some. Dec and early Jan are our cloudiest months because of Lake Michigan. Normally, our summers are perfect. Lots of sun and low 80's.

My first eclipse was in Aruba, I brought a scope and camera and tripod and remote trigger and all sorts of things. When it was all said and done, things didn't focus right, and then I did get the sun centered on the film well, and then this and then that and all said and done, I spent 2 of the 4 minutes concentrating on the equipment, not the Sun.
The second one was in Wyoming, we brought a sheet of solar film and some cardboard and made our own glasses in the car driving out there. No cameras, no binoculars, no nothing. This time I'll have equipment setup, but I won't bother using it myself, others can if they want.

April 8 of 2024 I may very well be in the zone of totality whether I like it or not. Likely returning my daughter to her first year at TCU after Spring Break.

Looks like we will see the 3/4 version in So Cal. Should be a clear day here. This is what we saw last time so Ho hum. There are no birds left so that's not even something to check out.

Who knows? We have crows and down at the beach there are gulls, terns and a few pelicans. Little birds like sparrows or even bigger ones like mockingbirds just went somewhere else. A few will return in a month, but I see very few birds a day.

We’re at the beach in Gulf Shores. If sky is clear should be amazing.

The average dB per GA flight is 75 (often 80) while a half mile away the jets are 90, but lasts a lot less longer due to the speed of the jets. IDT birds care for it. The airport doesn't want them anyway. There are 11 flight schools at LGB. Yeah, we have birds. They burn leaded gas. |
