964 value vs CGT... outrageous!
 

So get this. a relatively garden variety 964 (albeit 3.6 turbo S and tweaked a bit) sells for slightly less a low miles CGT .... on BAT. go figure..:eek:

2005 Porsche Carrera GT sold for $1,290,000

That's the last year of air cooled turbo, in the best trim. With a 5 speed. I get it.

A friend had a 964 RS that had always been a street car.

He got what he thought was a very good offer for it so accepted it. Probably regretted it a year later and kicking himself now.

That's insane! Unless by "tweaked" you mean it was actually a 935 that had been rebodied as a 964. Now, that's crazy town numbers.

$1 mil + is ridiculous for a 965. I'd rather have the CGT at that amount.

But it's also not a garden variety 964. That's the ultimate 964 Turbo: last year, 3.6, and the "S" model. They only made about 81 of those, no? But still, about 2 or 3 times what I thought it would go for.

You need to look up garden variety…
A 964 turbo S is not it. Only about 80 or 85 ever made…

So what is a 1994 965 turbo engine worth these days? My Father in law started stuffing one in his 83 cabriolet about 15 years ago and has since passed away. The car has been sitting for years untouched/unfinished in his shop. Basically as he left it in 2017.

Right, 964 TS for $100k vs CGT for 1.2m, that's one thing, but both for $1m+, CGT all day long.
I guess one difference would be ongoing cost, but if you can afford to pay that much, then you should be able to afford to maintain a car that was that expensive. I guess another example of expensive cars that might not be insane to up-keep/maintain/repair would be some of the old American muscle cars. Some of those prices have gotten crazy, and many/most of the parts are probably available from the avg flaps.

Yeh, the Motronic 3.6 964 Turbo was already fairly rare at fewer than 1500 built - really not the same as the 964 turbo that kept the 3.3 CIS motor embarrassingly late.

Being an S means it was built after the production run ended from 90 left-over bodies by Porsche Exclusiv (from Wikipedia: huh, did not know that).

Compounding that, according to the interwebs, 76 of those S models were built as the 965 flachbau mutation (not the same as the 911/930 flacbaus) - so a "regular" fender 3.6 Turbo S like the one on BAT would be even rarer.

The price reflects originality/rarity - just like the asking price for a factory SC/RS wouldn't bear any resemblance to the price of a regular SC...

Id rather have 44 $50k cars

LOL. #Metoo. But I suspect those who can afford million dollar cars are not of the pick-one-or-the-other types, but rather I'll-have-one-of-each types.

And they usually don't drive them. Just put them in a showroom and look for another collectable.

That same car sold for $75k ten years ago.
