It's probably a lot like a post dated check. Financial institution A wants to send funds to and account at Financial institution B. A tells B on some date "I'd like you to deposit some amount in John Doe's account on a date 3 days out." Your bank gets that notification and shows you that it's coming, and then 3 days out, you get the moola.

Sucks when your "cost of living increase" is less than the cost of living has increased.

Good to know Bob. Our chickens were on strike all through November and December (molting). They started laying again a few days ago, so maybe I'll go out and buy a new Tesla. You don't think it would be too ostentatious to have eggs AND a new car do you?

This just in, House Republicans are making clear that they intend to seek cuts to entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare with their new majority in the 118th Congress.

Not long ago there was a discussion here about keeping cash under your mattress for emergency back-up. Some suggested having a pile of 50’s or 20’s because 100’s were too big to exchange person-to-person.
I’m like, well $100. won’t go very far when bread is $15/loaf, a gal of gas is $8 and a dozen eggs is a thing of the past. |

The COLA increase will be a nice net positive for us. We live pretty frugally. We don't have to anymore, it's just habit and we enjoy being somewhat self sufficient.
I make our bread, two 250gram boules cost about $1. I do the rest of the baking too. Eggs - I don't know. I joke that by the time I add in labor they cost about $25 a dozen, but in fact if I double the cost of feed to cover housing and maintenance expenses they're about 50 cents a dozen. We give away more eggs than we use. We heat the west half of our house with wood from the property here about 80% of the time. If Social Security gave out time instead of money I'd be happier, but I'll take the money.
