Lying on a resume...

Please don't send this to PARF, it's not about him

Was reading on CNBC about this ..... lying or embellishing.

In my career, lying on one's resume, if discovered would have meant an immediate, "walk you to the door" dismissal. No further questions asked. Embellishing might be a grey area ..... but lying about one's education or former places of employment.... yer gone !

How about you guys? Has the world changed and I missed it?

Not changed in the private sector.

I assume you are talking about an elected official? The word fraud seems pretty accurate for this. I don't know the formal rules surrounding this however.

One can always say they are Native American…even if that is only 0.01%…a woke company might take the bait

I have never filled out a resume....so I have no opinion on that.

I have lied on dirt ground in Boy Scouts and it was not fun....esp in the winter.

It sure seems like there's a lot of layers to this new onion crop that showed up the last few years.
It's gonna take a while to peel back most of the layers. There'll be a new normal on the other side; it's happened throughout the history of the world, and now we get to watch.

Confucius invoked a curse, and these do seem to be interesting times.

I don't understand how you can 'embellish' without it being a 'lie'.

Well if you're applying for a security clearance you better not have done either.

Oh, wait, unless you're elected to Congress, then I guess you get a 'free pass' on that.

I'll see myself out before I say something that could incriminate me then.

You could lie your entire life and still be elected VP and President. That said, I have never lied on a resume but have seen a lot of fake education and vastly exaggerated experience listed on those of others that applied for/held Federal jobs.

I’ve never thought to lie or embellish my résumé. I can imagine it’s been done since the caveman days, But it would be much easier to prove right or wrong nowadays.

Lies on your resume will show up eventually, one way or another...

I'm guessing a large majority of resume's have some level of embellishment in them.

I see it all the time in sales. Person claims they contributed $5M in sales revenue. What they were was part of a team of people that generated that.

Depending on how you interpret "contribute' it is either accurate or embellishment.

Many organizations in the private sector now fact check a few key elements....like university attendance or perhaps make a phone call to a prior employer, especially if the experience garnered there is particularly relevant.

Now, to be fair, most universities or employers only make statements of fact (yes, he or she attended, worked here for this many years at this position) but if there are discrepancies at minimum it will be another interview with Human Remains to ask the specifics of the discrepancy.

if the guy was lying on the interview/resume...he/she is toast.

Nope, lies wouldn't be tolerated, and you certainly won't get hired.

Kind of what cstreit is talking about, "I did XYZ," but it really turns out that you were part of a team or on a project where XYZ was done, and you had a part, but it was just a part (and often a tiny or insignificant part).

Yep, in my world (IT) I've seen resumes that looked like the index or glossary of a technical manual. Yeah, the guy could spell all of the stuff and was aware of it, but certainly wasn't an expert or even very conversant. At the same time, I kind of feel like companies are asking for it. I've seen plenty of job reqs advertised asking for experience in the entire index or glossary of a technical manual. I really laugh when at the end the salary is listed, and it's an entry level salary.
