I need to get into this sheet music. There is a strangely sweet dissonance in there that I want to figure out.

I wasn’t going to say anything on this thread but what the heck…I’ll tell my two stories. In 1969, I was 10 years old and I distinctly remember our 16 y.o. babysitter excitingly telling us that she scored tickets for what sounded to my little ears like, “Crosby/Stills/National.” It might have been 1970, since she obviously said, “Nash and Young.” First I had heard of them and believe it or not, I paid a lot of attention to music as a child.

Fast forward to 1986, (the year he got out of prison), and I had the distinct displeasure of meeting the prick, Crosby. He was at a garden party thrown by Molly Barnes, an older art gallery owner and friend of mine. I might have also crossed paths with him somewhere else but I remember that party because of who else was there, (Paul Butterfield for starters), and it was a beautiful late spring day.

Crosby took an immediate and overwhelming hatred towards me that I’ve rarely experienced in life unless it was seconds before fists flew. It was not coincidentally matched or caused by the immediate and overwhelming affection that his wife took to me, (I was 26), and of course completely out of my control. If he had presented any physical threat, I’d have been nervous. As it was, it was just unpleasant. He was a mean little gnome.

It was the kind of thing that you don’t forget. Still, he was very gifted and he gave me and the rest of the world some beautiful music, albeit always in collaboration with others. I never held ill will towards him but I sure didn’t want to meet him again!

Believe me, I wish that I had a cool story about how we hit it off and hung out all afternoon but the true story is the one above.

I served on a local land use advisory committee with his wife several decades ago. He and I had several "interesting" exchanges both public and private. One time I supported a local land owner's project to put 5 houses on 7 acre parcel already zoned for what the land owner proposed. Crosby wanted it left vacant. He accused me of wanting to pave over our area in strip malls and apartment buildings. After the meeting he came up to me and said it was nothing personal but it was the public politics he had to address. I'd see him around here on occasion. He lived next door to some friends of ours.

Crosby was a seasoned sailor, having grown up hanging around the yacht harbor in his native Santa Barbara.
His former sailboat, the schooner Mayan, is currently berthed at the local small craft harbor here in Santa Cruz.

Thanks for the music, David...RIP

Sirius XM is playing his music all weekend on Deep Tracks. Along with that, they are playing past interviews with him about his life and experiences.
Today, he was talking about his interactions with the Beatles while they were recording Sgt. Peppers.

Lot's of good stuff from his life.

After reading the tributes to him from other artists, what's mentioned most is that "He was a complex and unique individual with a one of a kind with a voice that seemed to come from the Angels".

In other words, the guy was a dick but he could sing.

Oh crap .... I can't sing

I remember seeing a doc many years ago where his sailboat was "somewhere", not being maintained, and just weathering away in neglect.

He must have had a "magnetic personality" (or mebbe just good drugs?) way back in the day based upon another doc I saw years ago (Laurel Canyon or Troubadoor, etc. ... can't recall) where it was said that his place was THE place to hang out ... might have been Mama Cass who said it....

.... and he COULD sing

Lots of artists, athletes, actors...are best when considered synonymous with their craft. Set apart, not so much.

Such a beautiful song, written by David. I set this video to start at Guinnevere, but there's good stuff earlier, too.

Guinevere had green eyes
Like yours, milady, like yours
She'd walk down through the garden
In the morning after it rained
Peacocks wandered aimlessly
Underneath an orange tree
Why can't she see me?
Guinevere drew pentagrams
Like yours, milady, like yours
Late at night when she thought
That no one was watching at all
On the wall
She shall be free
As she turns her gaze
Down the slope to the harbor where I lay
Anchored for the day
Guinevere had golden hair
Like yours, milady, like yours
Streaming out when we'd ride
Through the warm wind down by the bay
Yesterday
Seagulls circle endlessly, I sing in silent harmony
We shall be free

I saw a show on Crosby, Stills, and Nash and they said they went back the next day to reshoot this picture that was used as their first album cover to have the members in order to match the name. It was shot in front of an abandoned house, which was torn down the next day, so they had to use the shot they had.

One of the breaking points between Crosby and The Byrds was him not getting the songs he wanted on their albums, notably "Triad," about a threesome. It was released later in the as an extra song that wasn't released. It's pretty good!

Crosby gave the song to The Jefferson Airplane, who did a great cover of it:

In June of 1967 I saw the Byrds at a SF bay Area Magic Mountain Music Festival.
While the band was getting ready to play, a young man in front of the stage handed David Crosby
a lit joint. He grabbed it and took a big toke, handed it back and they started playing.
At the time, I thought it was risky but real cool.
First U.S. Music Festival. Summer of Love and all that hippie stuff.

You're exactly right. Plus there was an odd tuning for the guitar on this one (standard is EADGBE). I want to tackle it very soon. Does this help?

You went to OU too? I was there briefly. Left when the National Guard invaded the campus and never went back.
