34 years ago today, Florida executed Ted Bundy. One of the most notorious serial killers in our nation's history.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Bundy Ted Bundy's hunting grounds included a popular park known as Lake Sammamish State Park, near the town of Issaquah, Washington. This also happened to be my family's favorite summer hangout on weekends, after school, and during summer breaks. We spent untold days in that park from the early 1960's right up through the late 1970's. With all of the time we spent there, we are all convinced there was no way we did not see him and his infamous white Beetle. Pretty chilling thought, even now, so long after the fact. The thought that we were playing in that park, swimming in that lake, while this predator was "on the hunt" still sends a shiver up my spine. There is evil in this world, an evil that grips some people in a way we will never understand. From what I gather, there have been many, many more, even more prolific, most never even caught. To think we actually crossed paths with one is a really hard feeling to describe...

Yeah, but Ted got laid a lot.
Would you rather have the farmer guy in British Columbia who fed his dead prostitutes to pigs for cleaning up the evidence??? Confessed to 49 of the deaths. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Pickton

Living in the PNW, we have more than our share of serial killers. The Greenlake (or is it Green River) killer supposedly dumped a body about a mile from my home. Body not found. It may have been a joy ride to get out of jail.
Either way, Bundy was bad. They all are. When humans are broken, it sobers you up real fast. Side note. My brother didn’t have many friends growing up. He started hanging out with this kid up the street. Kid showed my brother the pit where he burned cats. Brother didn’t go back. I googled the name of this guy and nothing. Maybe he got shanked in jail before he killed? No idea. Feels like we missed a bullet in that one. |

Nobody is "commemorating" anything. Just a warning, really, that they are out there. No more than that.
I often wonder how close my sister was to becoming one of his victims. We think about those things when it happens so close to home, especially when we were actively sharing one of the places in which he was most active.

I'm happy that Bundy's last crimes were in Florida...where the death penalty is carried out. Gary Ridgeway is still alive.
I often wonder which is the better punishment. Execution? Life with no possibility of parole? Damn...I dunno.

Punishment is only one component of the justice we seek. Another is protection, ensuring that there is no way someone like this can ever get out and possibly do it again. I don't know about Ridgeway, but that animal in Canada is actually eligible for parole soon. Could you imagine that?
Even if they get life without the possibility of parole, I then am left to wonder "why bother?" Why bother keeping them alive, at great expense - and some risk - to the rest of us? Bundy escaped twice...

I used to live on an Indian Reservation north of Seattle.
Body was found a mile from my place on 5 acres, wooded lots and remote, great place to dump bodies. They had cut off the head, feet, and hands to not be able to ID the core body. true story.
