longhoods and rising value
Although I am still working to get mine on the road, I have begun to wonder if I will still be able to enjoy it fully knowing the rising cost of the cars.
Do cars get too expensive to drive?

Just get the right insurance. Agreed value replacement cost and enjoy driving it.
I have kept increasing the replacement cost of my 911 but the insurance is still cheap. If the worst happens, almost anything can be fixed, or it can be replaced. It would had to find another 911 in the great shape mine is in, and all the little things fixed that a 38 year old 911 needs, and a kick butt AC upgrade.

I wouldn't let it stop you from driving and enjoying it. But, yes, it is a bit more stressful thinking about some idiot plowing into you at an intersection.
People say "just insure for agreed value and you'll be fine". I have mine insured at agreed value but even after your insurer cuts you a check - good luck finding another one just like yours in today's market. I would not want to be shopping for an air cooled car right now.

You don't own it if you can't beat on it.

yup.
junkers are the best cars, because you can do anything you want with them, and nothing of value is lost. i learned this when i got out of porsches, and bought my first 500 dollar miata. currently dreaming of a salvage title, multiple body panel damaged 996 to build into my next ice car. but even a junker 996 is worth 5-10k because of the part out value. and with what i plan to do to that car ... it will be worth 0 dollars when i am done with it. i can afford to do that with a couple thousand dollar cars, i can't afford to flush 10-15 grand down the toilet with even a rough 996. might push me into a C6 instead, they are much cheaper and easier to find in bad shape. it turns out snooty porsche owners dont like you crashing your car into 5 foot snow banks at 60+mph all weekend long, for its entire life, with saw blades for tires (rip fenders). it will never be "nice" after at that. but, thats what i do with cars. because its the most fun thing to do with them. No comparison between a restored long hood (or any nice 911) and a crapped out 944 (or Miata).

Cocker, did you see the Faster With Finnegan where they ice raced their Miata in MN doing exactly what you are talking about?
As for being too expensive to enjoy, it is in the back of your mind even with agreed value insurance. My RS has doubled in price, now I still drive it but it is something I think about. |

I've decided to sell my '67 because of this. I hardly drive it anymore. I'm too busy looking out for idiots or deer to truly enjoy driving the car as it's meant to be driven. It's a shame because it's so fun and pure to drive. I'll miss looking at it in the garage but is that worth the value of the car to me? No. I'll end up buying another air cooled sometime but not another long hood.

Ok, whatever. Maybe try discussing the thread topic rather than trying to take a lame cheap shot at him because he’s on the opposite side of you in PARF.
Leave your baggage at the door mate.

I got the car years ago from the wife as a PhD present.
It was like $5k. I drove it like I stole it. Then I realized, Albuquerque whether or not, it needed rot repair…and gravity down the slippery slope grabbed me. Like others have mentioned, it’s an awesome car, but the NOVA area is full of on the cell idiots. Not that I’d sell it, at this point it’s a big piece of my adult life, but I’ve been eyeballing a second cheaper toy. Close but not quite. Corvairs.

I'm not concerned about driving it.
I'm more concerned about where I'm going to park it. There are some places the parking is terrible. Bernie |

Sell it. (not an option for you but others certainly have) Park it and drive a few times a year. Drive it semi-regularly as you would like Daily driver it If you sold it, who knows what will happen to it. Will it just be an "investment" and sit in someone's garage forever or, any of the above. Does it matter to you? Probably not. But would it matter to you if you sold it and it was in an accident? All of the other options carry risk of minor accident, major accident and theft. For me, theft is my only concern because the car is gone. There are of course many ways to prevent theft to really minimize it. People talk about accidents all the time. Cars can be repaired. With a Celette, nearly any collision can be repaired. And while it has value, it's just a car. I think people forget about that. It's only a car. And other than being hit by a train or rear-ended by a semi, pretty much anything can be fixed. Is your joy tied to driving it or to its value? So with the right insurance, why not continue to drive it and enjoy it? Why does it's new value decrease your joy or increase your fear in driving it? It's just a car.

this thread strikes a bunch of chords for me. My super clean, original paint, high mileage, modified 3.6, 83 SC was wrecked, hit hard from behind 2+ months ago, and the at-fault's insurance is moving very slowly to settle.
The point of agreed value isn't just the cost of buying the car that should be equivalent to what what wrecked, stolen, flooded--it's about the total cost to FIND the replacement car, have it transported home, pay the state tax to register it, spend that 10% you spend every time you buy a new car to make it your own---- the whole thing. And in that instance, my car was underinsured with my carrier. I found a nice, original paint but patina'd replacement, and will move the best stuff over from my wreck to the new car, and sell off the left overs....and will be whole, only because I'm doing the labor myself and going thru the effort of selling the bits. All that being said, I will keep driving my cars and bumping up the insurance such that if or when this happens again, I won't have the same concerns that I'm suffering with now.
